They're also rumored to be looking at Jacksonville and Coastal Georgia...

Interesting.

Atlanta has the airport, distribution hub, and amenities of large city.

But Jacksonville has the huge port and is a city on the water with an even better cost of living.

Hmm.....

Are there advantages to Mercedes choosing Jacksonville over, say, Savannah if a port city is their preference?

Savannah people posted this a few weeks ago in their section but atlanta and jacksonville must have just been added or miss the cities being mentioned. The port is a good selling point for jacksonville and savannah but Alabama could use that too with Mobile having a port and Benz having a major plant in Vance, AL outside of birmingham. Also Alabama love giving major tax breaks to German companies an they would probably pull Louisiana in just cause the super dome has Mercedes Benz on it for naming right. But you cant go wrong with choosing Atlanta

I'm not sure. I do know that tons of cars come in through Jacksonville, but don't know if there is a physical reason for it.

What I'm also not sure of is if it makes any difference for your corporate HQ to be near port operations.

I do know that Alabama really struggled with the foreign car company managers not wanting to live in Tuscaloosa. Savannah, to some degree, may face that same challenge. And to be honest, Jacksonville as well...but it's a fairly picturesque city and it has a nice beach area, so I think it has that going for it.

Tax incentives are great, but you know, corporations are run by people. And often, decisions like this are heavily influenced by where the most powerful person or people who would be affected decide they'd rather live.

With all the digital technology available today, there's very little reason why many of the companies located in New York or Silicon Valley really NEED to be there. It's often soft reasons, like where management wants to live and where they think will be easiest to recruit people.

And Georgia gives tax breaks to a lot of companies too, including a certain Korean one that essentially provided jobs for Alabama residents and we continue to subsidize film companies etc.

IF you read the article is seems the choice for HQ is either stay in New Jersey or move to Atlanta.

NJ probably made more sense 30 years ago, but given their substantial investments in Alabama and Jacksonville, I'm sure Atlanta makes a pretty strong case.

Would be a huge score for Atlanta, particular on top of what Porsche is already doing here.

If Atlanta were to gain this, it would be the second corporate move from NJ to GA in the past few years. Wasn't Prince sports in NJ too?
