Mercedes-Benz could announce HQ relo to Atlanta on Tuesday; focus on Central Perimeter - Atlanta Business Chronicle

Quote:
Mercedez-Benz could, as early as Tuesday, announce plans to relocate its U.S. headquarters — a move that would create 1,000 jobs.
The German luxury automaker company is said to be in the market for more than 200,000 square feet of office space and has zeroed in on Atlanta's Central Perimeter business submarket for the relocation, according to a source. It is not clear if Mercedes will build to suit or take existing office space.
Mercedes has scheduled its annual president's reception on Tuesday with employees where it might disclose plans to make the move, Atlanta Business Chronicle confirmed. Dieter Zetsche, chairman of Daimler and head of the Mercedes-Benz division, is expected to attend the reception, NorthJersey.com reported, citing unnamed employees.
Quote:
On Dec. 16, Atlanta Business Chronicle first reported Mercedes-Benz USA's (MBUSA) plans to relocate its headquarters to Atlanta. The company is also considering the Research Triangle Park area in North Carolina.
Mercedes has reportedly been offered $40 million to $50 million in incentives to move to Atlanta, according to NorthJersey.com. Mercedes employs about 800 at its headquarters in Montvale, where it occupies about 141,000 square feet of office space.
Mercedes' possible relocation underscores the continued southward migration of the auto industry. The Southeast has become an emerging threat to the Midwest's domination as an auto industry hub, as Nissan, Toyota, Kia and Volkswagen put plants in low cost, union-free Southern states.
Metro Atlanta is also an attractive site for corporate headquarters, with a globally connected airport, a deep pool of knowledge workers and a low cost of doing business. Southern states, including Georgia, have also been aggressive with tax incentives as a way to draw corporate expansions and relocations.

Atlanta is a top East Coast sales market for Mercedes. The automaker also uses the Port of Brunswick near Savannah to ship its vehicles from. Mercedes builds C-class and SUVs in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Next year, Porsche will open a $100 million headquarters at Aerotropolis, a 130-acre mixed-use development near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Porsche will move from its Sandy Springs, Ga., headquarters to a 26-acre campus that will include a 150,000-square-foot office tower and a test track.
New Jersey, meanwhile, has redoubled efforts to keep Mercedes from bailing.
State officials have offered Mercedes-Benz USA a "substantial financial package" of incentives to try to keep the German auto company from moving its North American headquarters out of the Garden State, according to New Jersey state Sen. Gerald Cardinale.
State officials, led by Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno, are "actively working to try to keep'' Mercedes-Benz, Cardinale told NorthJersey.com. The state's offer includes tax incentives.
While New Jersey officials scramble behind-the-scenes to keep Mercedes-Benz, a New Jersey billboard owner is doing his bit with a more public plea.
Marty Judge , co-owner of Judge Outdoors in New York and Waldwick has put up billboard messages saying "Bergen County (heart) Mercedes-Benz. #PLEASESTAY" on routes 17 and 80 in Rochelle Park.
Mercedes U.S. headquarters are located in Montvale, which is in Bergen County. Judge said he planned to keep the billboards into the new year.
Yeahhhhh!!!!If they decide to bring their HQ's down here to Atlanta, we can talk to BMW and start a car District or something.

Is there still the chance that they will choose NC?

I don't think BMW is going to pack up and move their 1,200 acre campus 150 miles down I-85.

Nor do I think BMW's U.S. corporate HQ will leave Jersey. Heck I don't think MB will either.

Awesome, yet again state residents will subsidize the "free" market and bonus - they could be in Perimeter - an area with terrible infrastructure for the traffic it already has.

Way to go GA. Hopefully this won't happen.

I thought they would choose Perimeter, but hoped they would chooshe Downtown. Let's be homest though. A Perimeter location might actually create less traffic. I'm sure they are zeroing in on Perimeter because they know a lot, of course not all, of their employees will live in places like Alpharetta. Most of the employees will be driving anyway and this way a lot of them will drive less distance. Perimeter does have Marta access and before long it will connect to places like Alpharetta. I would have loved, and preferred, to see them build a new hq in South Downtown but I can see why they are looking at Perimeter.

Hopefully they build close to Marta. I assume they don't need a track like Porsche.
