Hi folks,

I'm 25, relocating to Atlanta in a few months. I'm looking for suggestions for where I should rent a place. I'm living with my boyfriend, and we have fairly different needs and I'd love to have some help reconciling our tastes. He's laid back and loves the L5P area, doesn't mind walking, and takes a big interest in the local bar scene. I'm more a fan of Buckhead, worried about my safety walking from the train, and proximity to things like grocery stores and movie theaters. We both love going out to eat, parks and outdoor events. We're looking to rent an apartment and don't have a car (completely reliant on public transportation and cabs) so necessities have to be a walkable distance.

Anyone have tips??

Since you're relying on walkability and public transportation I'd definitely recommend Midtown. Never really spent too much time in L5P but Midtown is a great place to be if you're looking for convenience and safety.

Midtown is great because there are lots of bars, Piedmont Park is right there which often hosts outdoor music events, and the train has multiple stops through Midtown. There are plenty of residential buildings in Midtown right next to MARTA train/bus stops.

The whole area has a very safe vibe. You really just need to avoid the occasional psycho homeless person. They're never violent though.

I would avoid Buckhead if you're looking for walkable places. Things are a bit too spread out up that way.

Where are your jobs located? What is your rent budget?

Interesting! I'll definitely look into Midtown. We're working in Sandy Springs and Downtown. Budget is around 1600.

The MARTA train goes all the way to Sandy Springs and Downtown as well! Definitely look into that.

Yeah, I wouldn't count on walkability. A lot of folks seek it out, but in practice, it is still unattainable here unless you're lucky enough to live and work close to MARTA. I live in Midtown myself and my office is right above Peachtree Center station. I still drive to work for the convenience. Takes 9 minutes from door to deck.

If you plan to own a car anyway, you'll spend more taking the train.
