Any advice on taking the plunge away from Buckhead?

26/m currently living in Buckhead growing tired of the scene and having a lack of interesting/affordable restaurants and bars within what feels like a safe walking distance (the vehicles are what scare me here...). I work in Cobb County just outside 285 and am terrified of what my commute may become if I have to deal with Connector traffic every workday. Used to live on 10th street while earning a graduate degree at Tech and felt like I was very far away from restaurants and shops, though I enjoyed Midtown once I crossed the 85/75. Lived in Vinings for ~6 months before terminating my lease early, because I wanted to meet people my age and enjoy some nightlife. Not so set on a wild nightlife anymore, but bars where I could meet others and hold conversations would be great. A 40 minute commute I'm wagering I'd feel as if I'm wasting my life.

1. Budget: $1100
2. House/Condo/Townhome? Renting apartment
3. Employment Status: Secure job w/ commute to Cobb County just outside 285
4. Children: No children or pets (though I love dogs)
5. Suburban or Urban lifestyle preference: Urban. Currently live in Buckhead, but wondering if I'd prefer Inman, Poncey, Midtown, or VaHighland. Enjoy walking around fairly well developed areas to coffee shops, outdoors, bars, and having a gym nearby. My main hesitation about moving away from Buckhead is 1) my commute to work turning into a daily traffic jam and 2) not being able to meet people my age (26, fairly outgoing, have a huge group of friends, but one could say they're mixed up with the wrong crowd and I'd prefer to branch out). Getting to Tech for football games would be great, but not at the top and certainly not above great food and people.
6. Easy access to public transit, important or not? Access to transit would be preferable, but not a dealbreaker.
7. Preferable demographics of desired neighborhood: I'm cool with anyone/everyone and encourage all sorts of demographics. I also realize gays have great taste in neighborhoods and am cool with that. I'm an educated straight 26 y/o male, so I want educated single women around the neighborhood too.

Midtown and West Midtown are both viable. Midtown out to Cobb on 75 is a breeze. Speed limit most mornings, though in the afternoon things can get dicey as they can everywhere else. But probably an easier commute than Buckhead, depending on where exactly.

I'm sure you're aware, however, that $1,100 in Midtown ain't what it used to be. Likewise Buckhead and everywhere else.

Inman Park and those sorts of places would be more difficult from a commute standpoint.
