When I go out on a dinner date in*Atlanta*with someone of a different skin tone, most of the time the server asks if it will be separate checks. But i ask them if they asked the table next to us and they get speechless. I was a server and hated splitting checks. Why would they assume it should be split if we just ask for the check? My experience was that when a table asked for the bill, it was always one bill unless they asked for a split.

Next time im going to say yes I will need each item split on separate checks and use the same card for all of them. The server wont mind doing the extra work since it was offered to be split anyway...

It Makes life much easier for the server if s/he know in advance that it will be split, that way they can enter it into the POS system as separate checks.

Not after the fact, then try to figure out who had what drinks, appetizers, entree, deserts ,,,, then try to re-construct the checks for each person (Or groups of people).

If the split is a even please divide this by X and put Y on each card its not a issue.

But to separate it out, each item need to be canceled from the POS on the Main Check, and then re-entered into a New check in the POS, Also they need to make sure that its in Check Adjustment mode in the POS, so the re-entered ordered don't get "fired" (Send to the kitchen) to be made.

I think you might be looking for controversy where it doesn't exist. More times than not, I'm asked if the table would like separate checks. After a while, it probably is just an automatic question.

Most of the time when I'm with friends the server asks automatically if it's separate or not.

95% of the time I've gone out with one or more other people the server has asked us about splitting the check. It's pretty normal.

Yeah - unless I'm obviously on a date or with family - the server usually asks if it will be separate checks too.

It seems that many, perhaps even most, instances of perceived slights or discrimination result from paranoia. If someone distorts things enough practically anything can be taken as an offence.

Made to sound like an observation, but resorted to possible discrimination. Irrelevant observation. I always receive one check no matter who I go with. This isn't the Hawk's Kiss Cam, only facts are considered when you drop off the check. No facts brought forth early on, then you get one check. Simple.

They're trying to do you a courtesy, no need to get confrontational.

i don't know. there are a lot of people on here who presume that whatever *someone else* experiences is not racial discrimination, because they are not discriminated against. the logic is, if it doesn't happen to me, it doesn't happen to anyone.

so i don't know, for real, i would've needed to have been there.
