Hell no!
When I lived in the COA, it was stupid crap like this from the legislature that made me furious enough to wish that the COA could/would secede from the state of georgia.

See stuff like this explains why Georgia will always be a retardedly run state as long as the current political establishment is allowed to fester in the General Assembly...

Just keep this in mind the next time a Republican tells you that theirs is the party of small government. This one's solution is to end tax breaks (i.e., raise taxes) and have the state government takeover well-run local infrastructure.

Not just no, but Hell No!

The NC legislature recently tried to pull the same crap with Charlotte's City owned/operated airport. It got pretty ugly up there, but the City prevailed.

If this ridiculous bill gains any traction here, you can bet that Kasim will sue - and win.

Edited to add: What happened to the supposed Kasim/Nathan 'bridge' we had going on?

Every so many years an exurban or rural state legislator gets the bright idea for the state to takeover Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport from the City of Atlanta.

Said idea of taking over the Atlanta Airport picks up steam and gains support from other exurban and rural legislators until they all realize that taking over the airport would require the state to pay to acquire, operate and maintain the airport.

When the realization kicks in that the state would have to pay lots of money for all of this (something that the state does not like to do for its existing infrastructure, much less any new infrastructure), these exurban and rural legislators often very quickly back off from the state airport takeover idea.

Though there is the possibility that this proposal could be different, history has demonstrated often that Georgia state government does not like spending lots of time and money to bring major ideas to fruition.

So until the state demonstrates that they actually want to PAY to takeover (and operate and maintain) the Atlanta Airport, I cannot even possibly take this latest state airport takeover proposal remotely seriously.

What if the state paid the CoA enough for the airport to complete the Beltline (transit included) and doubled MARTA heavy rail lines? Then the state would have funded transit in the city, something everyone in Atlanta gripes about.

Set the price tag high enough that it is worth it. Then Mr. Butts County can run the airport. Deal?

As long as Delta & the other airlines co-sign, and an independent commission runs it - deal.

But we both know it will never happen.

Deal! I would love to see a $2 billion airport purchase bill get passed through this Lege. The Beltline would get funded and every Republican in Georgia would lose his seat!
