Young Asian Indian Family moving from Boston, MA to Atlanta (Roswell: homes, neighborhoods)

My husband has a job offer in Midtown Atlanta. We have 2 kids, one in elementary and the other is a preschooler. We are looking for a great school district with a neighborhood feel to it. Some Indian families in the neighborhood would be a plus.

We would like to be close to Indian amenities such as grocery stores, temples and shopping if possible. We are looking at single family homes with a budget of around 300K - 450K range.

Commuting is also a concern as so far we are used to the Boston MBTA. How bad is driving to Midtown if living in one of the northern suburbs. I have been looking at Marietta and Alpharetta areas so far.


Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Gwinnett County is the most diverse county in the area and you can take the express bus directly into Midtown. Check out the Johns Creek - Peachtree Corners area.

Have you looked at Decatur? It would be a relatively easy commute for you. It has a neighborhood feel. There are a number of Indian groceries, stores and restaurants nearby. If you look up "Lawrenceville Highway Dekalb Industrial Way Decatur GA" on Google maps you can zoom in on an area with a lot of Indian owned businesses. And you'll see how close it is to some great neighborhoods in Decatur and to Midtown. I'm not with the Chamber of Commerce, but I just think Decatur is a neat area.

It is really close to Midtown. I am a little concerned about the home prices especially if I am looking for the good school neighborhoods.

Based on your criteria, I recommend the following areas...

In East Cobb: The Walton High District, the Pope High District, or the Sprayberry High District

In South Lilburn and East Lilburn: The Parkview High District

In Roswell: The Centennial High District or the Roswell High District

I'd definitely give a good look at Gwinnett/East Lilburn (Parkview and Brookwood clusters).

There is a strong Indian presence, Indian grocery stores.

It has the largest BAPS Swaminarayan Hindu Temple outside of India and this has attracted many to the area.

You'll also see some large Indian presences in the Duluth/Johns Creek area, but more ethnicity based businesses cater to Koreans.

The other locations aries mentioned are worth looking at too.

Decatur would be the best area for your needs in relation to your husband's job. The northern suburbs have a nice Indian community but it's too far of a commute.
