I thought all the progressive, well-to-do Decatur gentrifiers weren't afraid of black people.

I've never gotten the impression that p*&^ing people off is the best way to persuade them to join your cause. And most of the diners in Decatur were probably sympathetic to their cause before having their meal interrupted. Just not very smart.

This would look a little different if the roles were reversed. Singling out a group based on the color of their skin is not okay in my book. This is not going to help in any way.

From Gawker:

"The protesters, most dressed in black, read the names of African Americans killed by police punctuated with chants of "ashe," a word from the Yoruba language of West Africa comparable to "amen." Timed by participants, the ritual takes four-and-a-half minutes — since Michael Brown's body was left on the street for four-and-a-half hours in Ferguson.

'Every 28 hours, a black person in America is killed by the police,' the protesters said. 'These are our brothers and sisters. Today and every day, we honor their lives.'"

I agree with the protests, but not with going into the restaurants. Decatur Police Station, Decatur City Hall, the Courthouse, the Square above the MARTA station...taxpayer-owned areas...are the best places.

But if they are willing to pay the price for protesting inside a private business, then more power to them.

Again, the City of Decatur has nothing to do with this. Why target Decatur PD & City Hall?

And "more power to them," really?

Please try to imagine a bunch of white people, dressed in all white, protesting in restaurants frequented by blacks about the number of black men killing cops, and other people for that matter. Sounds racist to you, right?

Everyone supporting the black brunch protests would be furious. I wouldn't like it either, but then again it seems a lot of people think there is a huge difference between extremists on either side. I don't see much of one at all.

I wonder how many of the protesters live in DeKalb, are registered to vote, vote and when they do vote, they vote for the people that are part of the problem in a very broken government and school system?

The best way to affect positive change (esp in DeKalb) is to vote responsibly.

I guess the idea is to confront folks in their upper middle class comfort zones and force them to think about young black men being shot by the police?

A couple of things, why does the title say "black protesters" the organization is lead by a white guy. Also, these idiots are trespassing and should be charged, you don't have the right to protest in someone business. This definitely doesn't seem like a black lead organization, black folks typically know the consequences of such idiocy, jail.

In case you haven't heard (or probably because it's not something you would care about anyways) Decatur PD has had it's own faux pas with racial profiling in the last year or so.

So much so that the issue rated a poorly written and quite pretentious AJC article.

Racial profiling allegations cloud Decatur

And another article that at least gives the issue and the victims a little more justice.

Request respect - Racial profiling group makes recommendations - Decaturish

But do go on.

I suppose that situations like this are quite simply beneath you and are unworthy of your momentary attention.
