Supposedly, a location for the plant will be announced in about a month....
Quote:
Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina and South Carolina have all previously been mentioned as possible sites for the facility, according to charlestonbusiness.com
Atlanta Business Chronicle reported in January Mercerdes’ move to Atlanta is likely to have a domino effect in northern New Jersey, also home to the U.S. headquarters of BMW and Volvo.
Beyond demographics (*the South has younger, growing populations) and market realities (auto manufacturing, especially for the imports, has coalesced in the union-free South), is the issue of soaring taxes in the Northeast hubs, ABC’s Urvaksh Karkaria reported.

Lose GM and Ford plants and then everyone else moves here. I love it, especially if Volvo moves to the south side with Porsche.

It would be nice if Georgia could snag it, but I suspect other Southern states will put up much more of a fight this time. This might create a real battle between them. It's funny how the politicians and the economic development officials fight so hard for these giant corporate investments. It's because those are the ones that generate the most media buzz. The truth is, most jobs in the U.S. are generated by small firms and small businesses and this has been the case for a long time now. No one notices the little flower shop or café on the corner, but everyone notices Mercedes-Benz.

...In other news, Daimler was expected to build their new Sprinter Vans in Pooler but they are expected to announce that they will instead build the plant in North Charleston, SC (Report: Daimler AG expected to skip Ga., select S.C. to make Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans - Atlanta Business Chronicle).

The excessive corporate welfare being used to get these companies is insanity. This is particularly interesting for supposedly conservative states.
