I am considering moving to Atlanta area, and I happaned to have some job offers in the area called Griffin. They say it's about 40 minutes away from metropolitan Atlanta. Will anyone provide me any information about this city? I would greatly appreciate it.

Griffin (in Spalding County) is in the southern extreme of Metro Atlanta...it is actually a part of the metro area.
It is about 35 miles south of downtown Atlanta and about 25 miles south of the Airport.

I agree with sahm3 with the suggestion of not living in Griffin. It's not that I think that Griffin is a bad town (although I understand from a police officer on this list that there is a lot of gang crime there) just that we find it has very little to offer for the sprawl, though it has a nice historic and vintage residential area near the downtown. People on this list sometimes talk about Griffin not having traffic, etc. and I wonder WHERE they are living in Griffin. Even the downtown area has TRAFFIC and the newer area with restaurants, movie theatre, etc. is wall to wall traffic. Griffin is the closest town to us with a Lowe's and Home Depot, so we go there basically ONLY for these two stores (and one of the downtown antique stores).
If you like a lot of shopping, etc. and don't mind rapid development, Mcdonough might be a good bet. We are very frequently there for the choice of stores and restaurants (chain) that are close by for a quick meal after shopping.
If you prefer (as we do) a relatively stable rural life -- with going to Mcdonough or North Macon for shoping, restaurants, etc. -- then there are several smaller town near Griffin such as Zebulon, Barnesville, and other small towns in the general vacinity.
You might check city-data on Griffin and look at the part about closest towns, etc.
I believe that housing prices are cheaper in Zebulon and Barnesville but if you like ready, frequent access to malls etc. these places might not suit you.
All the best on your move,
zebbie

Does anyone have any current info on the DelWebb Sun City Peachtree in Griffin, GA?
My husband and I were thinking of checking out the area. But from reading these posts it doesn't seem that we should. Is there any convenient shopping within/next to the community? Any information would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Tanger has an outlet mall within about 20 minutes. The community is between state hwy 19/41 and I-75. Its 5 minutes from GA 20 where a new mall is going in. There is a new Publix shopping center there as well. The Sun City Peachtree looks great from the entrance. Its tucked away - off of Hwy 3 and has limited traffic currently at the entrance.
Griffin is a peculiar town. Experiment station is on the north side where UGA has their AG school, nice campus but it is surrounded by low income housing. However, a developer and the city are in the process of buying this area from the citizens to make a much nicer corridor of residences and shopping. They've been taxing the hell out of the area to fund this.
There is a gorgeous pocket in SE Griffin of nice, established homes. All built between the civil war and the 1960's. There's even an area with 1940's-1960's contemporary style homes with many Frank Lloyd Wright influences. The streets are lined with live oaks and pecan trees. If you have auto dimming headlights they come on during mid-day because its so well shaded. Gorgeous homes and plenty of well-to-do families.
The schools system is not that great and the local industry is floundering around as large employers (Caterpillar, Yazaki, Nacom) are all relocating or closing indefinitely. Supposedly new contracts with other employers are "coming" but no one really knows.

I grew up in Griffin, moved to South Carolina for college and grad school, and would highly recommend the town. Granted, it doesn't have all the malls or shopping that Henry and Clayton Counties have, but it is perfect if you're looking for a small, family-oriented community where you really can see someone you know everytime you go to the grocery store. It may seem unsightly if one simply drives through, but it has most everything anyone might need (fabulous restaurants, coffee shops, bookstores, shopping, and neighborhoods); if there's something you do need, Atlanta's a 45-minute drive.
I would recommend Griffin, GA to anyone, and I'd absolutely move back!

I agree with Roberts, Griffin is a nice place to live. If you need info on a homebuilder or land, I can help you out, as I know a great one down that way!
