Default ski trips from ATL

One of the big things we will miss about TX is being able to drive to reasonable ski resorts.

We will still try to hit Colorado periodically...but with three kids and all that entails...ski trips that involve airfare are going to be very much an OCCASIONAL thing after we move.

So, where is there good, driveable skiing? I have been to Gatlinburg...and I wouldn't so much call that skiing.....

Rec's?

...West Virginia is going to be the 'closes't, some what 'decent' skiing but still nothing near Colorado.....

North Carolina is still like skiing on ice and the few runs they have are very short. If you can hit when they actually have no not horrible but then it's packed

Gatlinburg, TN (in the Smoky Mountains) looked good when I drove by but I haven't tried it.

I usually ski in Vermont when I visit my family in CT, so I haven't brought down my skis to try out Gatlinburg yet. :-(

There's plenty of skiing in N.C.
Don't let the pampered of Rocky snow spoil it for you. It's just a timing and close watch of weather conditions.
From Cattaloochee in Maggie Valley, to Wolf Laurel, Beech Mountain, and Sugar (in Boone) there plenty of snow- either natural, or man-made.
I've made countless trips to N.C. for skiing and it was always a last minute type of thing. Watch weather conditions and cycles.
Everybody use to complain about skiing on ice- that was actually poor man-making (snow) equipment- it's much better now. The other problem that caused ice was warm daylight hours (above freezing) then freezing temps at night.
So, if you can be somewhat open for a weekend trip- watch the weather, get the local report from where you plan to go, and you just might have a helluva good time.

West Virginia skiing is a 7 hour drive and pretty much a straight shot once you get to I-77.

It's not going to be Colorado skiing.... but its fun, cheap, and relatively close. We just got back from Winterplace. Lots of real snow.

7 hours is Nothing to us! We are used to at least 12 hours from Dallas!
This made my night!

Yep. I'm from WV originally and Snoe Shoe and Canaan Valley offer great skiing up there. Gets busy busy in the Winter but they may be able to tell you the best times to avoid it on the phone. I think the 7 hour estimate is a bit soft (unless you speed like heck and then the cops up there will be very eager to pull you over). More like 9-10 hours. ;-)
