Excellent point. Too many people think that if something is outside of their little bubble in Atlanta then it either isn't worth their time or doesn't exist.

What's so interesting about the North Side (by north I mean anything north of Buckhead(Atlanta ITP)).

I have only lived and worked on the north side of the metro. Well now, while still technicall north side, I live in MIdtown. My brother has always lived on the south side. We are both transplants, but as they say different strokes for different folks.

One thing I'll give the southside is that the traffic is a whole lot lighter. I also find the area has a stronger sense of community. That can be good or bad depending on how you look at it, but everyone pretty much keeps to themselves on my side unless we have a tennis tournament or what not.

Both areas have great parks which if that's your thing and are beautiful. Things I take for granted like say a Trader Joe's may not have a location on the south side. That doesn't mean that it is not more than made up for in Georgia Farmers' markets that I would like to visit if I felt like taking the drive.

Since you mentioned the airport, I'm going to assume you were not asking about money. The south side is a little more blighted and yes, there are more blue collar positions (I hated that I used that phrase but I had to break it onw down). I'd say there is a lot more than airport.

I'd consider moving to some parts if I did not think I'd having a full blown nervous breakdown commuting up here.

As a fan of the Southside (less the terrible drivers) I have to say they have us beat in the parks department. Specifically The Palisades. The best natural spot ITP.

As a relative newcomer, when we were looking at where we planned to live / buy (and spend at least the next 10-12 years - until our kids get out of high school and are well into the early college years), realtors, regular people and many websites touted the north counties and communities in Cobb, North Fulton and Gwinnett. The south side, by implication or directly, was presented as poorer, less upwardly mobile, heavily African-American (e.g. no real diversity), economically more stagnant and with bad schools and higher crime.

So we focused on Cobb, though we looked at homes in Gwinnett and North Fulton, during our search, too.

The only areas in the South that some people spoke highly of were Fayette County, Peachtree City and Newnan.

These people are uninformed because in most cases the south side is more diverse than the north side. (maybe with the exception of extreme south Gwinnett.) There are also communities where there are houses from 100,000-2,000,000 dollars all within one mile( Lake Spivey, the Clayton Panhandle, Fayette County, and parts of south Dekalb). Crime is about the same anywhere in Atlanta, and there are bad and good schools just like anywhere in the metro.
