Crime is about the same anywhere in Atlanta, and there are bad and good schools just like anywhere in the metro.

Believe me, I'm not saying these advice givers were on point about everything they said. But I imagine that many transplants get the same spiel, don't you think? It's all Cobb, Cobb, Cobb, North Fulton and parts of Gwinnett all day everyday. I think only if someone particularly mentions the South side or if their budget dictates they can't do Cobb or N. Fulton will realtors direct people in that direction.

The heavily black population wasn't presented from a prejudicial perspective, but more like "Those neighborhoods are more monolithic and homogenous" POV.

Just like other areas of Metro ATL are misunderstood and unappreciated, I'm sure there are probably some nice neighborhoods south that get no credit.

Clayton County is probably one of the MOST diverse in Metro Atlanta. It has Black, Hispanic, Asian, and White populations. What is more, they usually live happily in the same neighborhoods! I will admit that a large percentage of the White population, especially in the Forest Park, Lake City, and Morrow areas are older and tend to be longtime residents.

At one point a few years back the Southside was becoming much more diverse...I'm not sure it's still happening, but it will begin again sometime in the near future. The diversity that the city of Atlanta has been experiencing will eventually spread southward due to more affordable real estate and a broader discovery of the beautiful neighborhoods.

For you guys doubting the southside's diversity let's use Forest Park as an example.

City of Forest Park 2010 Census
Whites-19.2%
Blacks-37.7%
Asian- 7.9%
Hispanic-34.3%

The idea that the entire south side is monolithic black is nonsense. What an overgeneralization. That is especially not the case in the southern suburbs that don't border the city. The bottom line is people shouldn't blindly accept these vastly overgeneralized assumptions (and they shouldn't perpetuate them either if they don't have experience here). Don't hesitate to check it out or consider it. Plenty of options, positives, and great communities!

The south side, by implication or directly, was presented as poorer, less upwardly mobile, heavily African-American (e.g. no real diversity), economically more stagnant and with bad schools and higher crime.

So we focused on Cobb, though we looked at homes in Gwinnett and North Fulton, during our search, too.

The only areas in the South that some people spoke highly of were Fayette County, Peachtree City and Newnan.

I think we are forgetting King Henry County Here, it is one of the larger, more populated and more affluent Counties on the south side. Not to mention the traffic isnt much better than the northside.

Forest Park isn't really representative of most Southside suburbs and South Atlanta...it is more diverse than most towns in that general area.

The further out suburbs on the Southside are definitely a lot more white than the close-in ones...I don't think anyone is denying that.

Joe Tarheel, Forest Park is VERY representative of the population of Clayton County, especially the east/ northeast side (Forest Park/ Lake City/ Morrow. (Morrow and Lake City are definitely more Asian, the Lake Spivey/ Historical Jonesboro areas a little Whiter, Riverdale/ North Clayton a little Blacker) but it gives a general representation of our wonderful and VERY diverse county. This is coming from someone who LIVES here; your moniker sound North Carolinian, where do you reside?

It is repersenitive of areas around it such as Morrow, Lake City, Riverdale, and Jonesboro. Of course the entire southside can't be like this, but the northside isn't like this either.
