A major Westside property owner and a local business are teaming up to help raise funds for the reopening of Waterworks Park, one of the greatest landmark parks in Atlanta. Westside Provisions District and Monday Night Brewing have joined to support Friends of Atlanta Waterworks.*

The "Friends" group is asking the city of Atlanta to reopen greenspace surrounding Atlanta Waterworks in Midtown, that for more than a century was open to the public The area was fenced off prior to the Olympics due to" security concerns" and has been remained off limits to the public since 1996.Atlanta Waterworks is being envisioned in accordance with the Atlanta Beltline's subarea 8 master plan and will include walking trails, green lawns, old-growth oak trees, and connectivity to future Atlanta BeltLine, according to "the Friends"

The "Friends" organization, with the help of the Westside Provisions District and Monday Night Brewing, is hosting a "kickoff visioning and friendraiser" on May 21.
( Hope the group has some thoughts on Huff Road as well)

Sure is disappointing that this is dragging out. News reports set expectations of an announcement in early 2014 with a newly elected city council person leading the charge and that talks were underway.

We're hearing different things about the pace. Part of the problem is that there are so many contingencies--the City Council, the Mayor, Watershed Management, Dept. of Parks and Rec, Homeland Security. A lot of folks have to sign off and get on board. And even then, it may have to be done piecemeal: perhaps one reservoir is opened first, or just the area around the lodge, etc.

What will speed the process up is citizen pressure and support of local businesses and developers. So it's absolutely vital to get folks to come to things like the Friendraiser event on Wednesday next week (mentioned in the top post of this thread), to write and call the mayor and their councilperson, etc.

Here's a direct link to the event this Wednesday at Monday Night Brewing. Should be fun! City data folks can use it as an opportunity to support parks while doing an in-person meet-and-greet! https://www.facebook.com/events/1502274596662839/

I wonder if they will maintain higher water levels in the reservoirs if it's turned into a park...

That park would be a great addition to that up-and-coming area. Hope it happens.

I am sure glad to see this happening.

Have y'all gotten to the park visioning stage yet?

I remember this from the old days, but how will the new park look?

Some renderings were debuted at the event on Wednesday. Here's an example, where you can spot a before and after set of pics:

Creative Loafing may be working on a piece on this very question. Will post as I learn more.
