Interesting article in the NYT.

I haven't looked up the data but is this true in the majority black areas of Atlanta?

78 males per 100 females is a pretty striking difference.

Quote:
Why do some places have so many more missing African-American men than others?

In a recent article, we detailed a severe demographic imbalance: There are 1.5 million fewer prime-age black men (25 to 54) living in their communities than black women, census data show. The largest causes of the trend appear to be higher incarceration rates and higher mortality rates for black men than for any other large demographic group. But the extent to which black men are outnumbered by black women varies tremendously across the country.

State by state, the largest disparities are evident in Alabama, New York, Illinois, Mississippi and Georgia: In each state there are fewer than 78 prime-age African-American men living in households for each 100 black women. Add Arkansas, Maryland, South Carolina, North Carolina, Louisiana, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Missouri to the list, and there are 14 states in which there are fewer than 80 prime-age black men living in households for each 100 black women.

It may have something to do with the high number of black kids growing up with absentee fathers. I don't remember the actual percentage, but I know it's very high.

That's part of the actual issue being examined.

But something tells me this thread is going to go left VERY quickly.

Seems like that would be more of an effect than a cause.

However, I have read that the "absentee black father" is a myth anyway.

What does prime age mean and why was the term not specified as criteria for measuring each gender?...i know what it is, but it seems pretty obvious that if youre only measuring "prime-age black men" vs the total number of black women, the number of prime age black men will always be lower than the number of black women in aggregate...kind of like asking why there are only 60 wooden legged black women with mustaches, and hooks for hands for every black male. Kinda obvious that youre significantly narrowing the criteria for one demographic while measuring it against the entirety of another demographic.

Well, the article says 25-54. I think that is just a term demographers use to refer to people who are probably in their primary working (and possibly family raising) years.

If it's a myth then it's a pretty well researched one. There has been a massive amount of information published on this topic, but that's a discussion for a different thread.
