Gwinnett County Commissioners have approved a ground lease agreement that allows the county’s development arm to work with North Carolina-based Concord Sugarloaf LLC to build a Marriott hotel at Gwinnett Center.
The $70 million hotel will be the center’s headquarters hotel, meaning it will serve as the base of operations for organizers of large conventions and conferences that require multiple meeting locations, reports Gwinnett Daily Post.
The lease agreement, approved Tuesday, moves the county’s goal of having a headquarters hotel at the Gwinnett Center one step closer, the paper says.
Concord must still design the hotel, which could be a 12-story tower, before ground can be broken, the paper adds.

Where does the money come from for MARTA?? (bus and rail) Could some that money be allotted for that? I'm assuming that money comes from elsewhere. I mean really, a SEVENTY. MILLION. DOLLAR. Hotel?! Psssst! Waste. I guess this will be Gwinnett's Cobb Galleria.

The new hotel at Gwinnett Center is actually reportedly being funded with no taxpayer dollars. The new hotel is reportedly being paid completely for with private funding secured by the project's hotel developer.

Officials are particularly pleased that they were able to attract such a large investment to the county without having to commit any taxpayer dollars as an enticement to Concord officials. The project is expected to be funded entirely with private funding secured by the hoteliers.

#“This might not be the only, but it’s one of the only ones that I’ve heard of where you have a headquarters hotel that’s been developed without some sort of commitment or investment from the municipality’s taxpayers,” Williams said.
The construction of the new full-service Marriott hotel on the grounds of the Gwinnett Center most likely cannot be considered a waste, but far from it.

The Gwinnett Center complex is actually an extremely busy complex with many conventions, events, concerts and exhibitions occurring at the complex on a frequent basis. Gwinnett Arena has even hosted the SEC Women's Basketball Tournament in recent years (2014, 2013, 2010 and 2007).

As for any future expansion of transit in Gwinnett County....$70 million might be able to buy some significant upgrades in bus service, but $70 million would likely be but just a drop in the bucket when it came to paying for the implementation of high-capacity passenger rail transit service in the county.

Though one very-important thing that we hopefully can take away from the reportedly completely privately-funded hotel construction project at Gwinnett Center can hopefully serve as some kind of financial model of how future transit upgrades and expansions can be paid for mostly with private funding.

It's a great venue. They keep it up really nice, there is plenty of free parking, and local police do a fantastic job directing traffic and preventing the disastrous traffic jams that can happen around Philips Arena during big events. I saw Lady Gaga there. And Slayer. Good shows.

Pretty much.

The proposed 12-mile extension of the MARTA Red HRT Line from North Springs to Windward Parkway has been estimated to cost somewhere between $1.5 billion to $2 billion.

A future rail transit line into the county from the MARTA Doraville Station up to at least as far as the Gwinnett Center complex (which is an implementation of rail transit service that many Gwinnett County business and real estate interests intensely desire) would be roughly about 15 miles or so in length.

...Which means that such a future high-capacity rail transit line deep into Gwinnett County would likely have a cost that was similar to the proposed extension of the MARTA Red Line from North Springs to Windward Parkway.
