Video emphasizing that violent crime is rising enormously in the city of Atlanta begins with an ad for Gwinnett Medical Center and closes with a reminder that robberies in Cobb are fewer than this time last year. Gee, wonder who 11 Alive's audience is?

This report by 11Alive is horrible reporting.

Zone 6 is made up of the following neighborhoods in addition to Little Five, Poncey-Highlands, and Old Fourth Ward.

Grant Park, Glenwood Park, Inman Park, East Atlanta, Kirkwood, Edgewood, East Lake, Morning Side, Lake Claire, Cabbagetown, Reynoldstown. The population of Zone 6 can't even be compared to zones 3 and 4.

Maybe denial is the reason there's such a problem. Its certainly the reason the APS cheating scandal went on so long. If not for the AJC and the governor, it would never have ended. The Chamber of Commerce tried hard to cover it up.

For people who aren't in denial, the CrimeMap Tracking they have for DeKalb and Gwinnett is pretty interesting. I do wonder if Decatur is reporting. There's nothing there.

More crime in south Atlanta than north?

I sure am glad that someone is reporting on this brand new information!

They aren't comparing zones against one another or doing a per-capita crime-report. They are comparing last years crime numbers to this years. They are up in Zone 6 as compared to Zone 6 last year. Simple as that.

I live in Kirkwood, Zone 6, and can tell you that all crime is down here. Places like L5P, Ponce De Leon corridor, Edgewood Ave are business/commercial districts that attract more people and more crime.
The stat at the end about Cobb County is odd. Can't really compare a whole county to an urban city, but the media does what it wants.

Once again, you definitely can compare from year to year within areas just fine. There has either been more crimes or less crimes in each area. The number has gone down since last year in Cobb and has gone up since last year in all of Zone 6. That is irrelevant to how many people are living there or how dense/spread out it is.

You are right that you can't compare actual crime rates without getting into per-capita rates, etc but you can look at something simple like is it more or less than last year. It doesn't mean you can draw sweeping conclusions from that data (there could easily be an anomaly that affects the numbers from one year to the next).
