I should also add that people who say run are coming from a real place of fear. Its easy to for others to say she is foolish especially as a parent of a minority.
Perhaps if one doesn't break the law they wouldn't need to run.

If you commit a crime and run you're a coward and you wind up getting shot, or getting your neck broken, or "I can't breathe" society is better without you.

If you commit a crime be a man and face the law
Also I have done jail time so it's not like I have no experience

The difference is I never felt justified in my crime, I'm a human with morals and turned myself in because I felt bad about breaking the law

Also atlanta has a black mayor, a black police chief, and a mostly black city council. If anything it's not blacks who have to worry about being targeted for racism in Atlanta

You blow that dog whistle hard enough, you might choke on it when you gasp for air.

If you're the beneficiary of white privilege I totally see how you would think it's foolish to run from cops. Cops are the people who protect us, right? For people who didn't grow up with that luxury it's something very different. Cops are the people killing black kids all across the country—why wouldn't you run away from that if you were a black kid?

This is a really stupid conversation to have on an internet message board though... because idiots like the one above find any place people are having a frank and honest conversation and use it to shout their ill-informed opinions at no one in particular.

I'm not a beneficiary of white privilege.

I'm of the camp that running just makes the sh*tstorm worse. And I'm not really trying to make things anymore complicated for myself. But hell I come from a country where police brutality is much more the norm than it is here. You act right to survive. Even if you are guilty as sin.

Like I said earlier....how has running worked out for people? Maybe it worked during slavery....hell maybe it worked right up until 1950s. But in this day of patriot acts and video surveillance and DNA testing and fingerprinting...I mean...where you gonna run to? There isn't really many places to hide, and you've just added more charges.

I need people to think 5-10 steps ahead, not just the next step in front of them.

How has complying worked out for people? Eric Garner didn't run.

We're also talking offenses like holding a realistic toy gun (not a crime), selling loose cigarettes (barely a crime), and walking down the middle of the street instead of the sidewalk (oh my god really). These are some of the things that cops have stopped black men for, that led to those men's deaths, just in the last what, 12 months? These are not the kinds of offenses that the cops are going to track you down for. So yes, I totally understand how someone could logically think they have a better chance of running away from a cop than surviving whatever might happen to them if they surrender. I'm a white guy, I don't live with that fear. But I just think it's ignorant to say how someone else should behave when their life experience with the police is, unfortunately, completely different from my own.
