It depends on how the metro area is counted. There's a 10 county version, a 15 county version, an 18 county version and a 20+ county version.
In my mind, the metro area is Fulton + DeKalb + Cobb + Gwinnett + Clayton (since it sneaks inside the perimeter to pick up part of the airport). That 5-county combo yields about 3.7 million people, realistically.* Some of the other counties beyond that have populations of 50,000 to 200,000 people. In time, they will be forces to be reckoned with, no doubt.
Someone needs to finally define what the Metro Atlanta area really is!
* 1 million + .8 + .8 + .8 +.3, in that order = 3.7 million

They have- it's the official Atlanta MSA (Metropolitan Statistical Area), and it's the 23-county version.

Wow, and, in fact, that how they get the 5 to 6 million figure. That's 18 more counties sharing 2.5 +/- million people. That's why the density feels low. In fact, if you go to West Cobb, say Powder Springs (not that you'd want to), the lots are huge and there is a lot of space out there. And Cobb is in my list of the most populated 5 close-in counties. Not only that, the 23 county definition covers 1/4 of the land in Georgia, more or less!

Remember, Georgia's counties are small (there is a reason for this...I can explain later)...so in another state, 23 counties would equal like 8 counties (or even less!).

Explain why the counties are small! I'd love to know!
In Louisiana we don't have counties. We have parishes and they're small, too. So, I didn't even notice that Georgia had small counties compared to the rest of the country. Heck, it's the first place I've lived that had counties instead of parishes.... LOL!

Aren't the counties small because they were determined by whether you could ride across them on horseback within one day?

Yes, that is one reason. Really that most (or all) parts of the county were within "a day's journey" from the county seat (in pre-automobile times of course).
The other reason is Georgia's former county-unit system for electing state representatives.

I'm moving to Atlanta in April. I don't know much about the city at all. I went there for a day to check things out. Seemed pretty busy to me, and it was on a Sunday. I really don't know what to ask.....

How do you like the city overall compared to where you are from?
I am in NY, and I know there are a lot of comparisons to NY.
Do you go to the city of Atlanta? Is it clean? Fun?
Living here we are used to going into Manhattan to do a lot of things.
I was there once, and I didn't see a lot of the good areas. Where we were driving was a ghetto area and it was really run down and full of vagrants.
I did drive through Buckhead around dinner time, and it seemed pretty nice, but I didn't feel safe driving through there.

Atlanta is definitely not New York. You may feel unsafe because you won't see people walking the street as much, except for perhaps the more scary (homeless) people, but I wouldn't say it is really unsafe.
There are some cool neighborhoods, mainly little 5 points and east atlanta village, that feel like the village in nyc. However, they are very small, maybe 6 blocks each. But growing fast.
I'm considering moving there myself having spent just a few weekends and I'm not really sure yet if it is very fun. There are cool neighborhoods like the aforementioned ones which seem like ideal places to live, however as for nightlife, the cool bars seem kind of empty even on weekend nights... It's just nothing like new york. But getting there I guess.
But if you like dance clubs and the hip hop scene and all I guess it's a paradise.
