compelled, in my opinion, someone like me, in their 20's and a few years off from having children, there's no DOUBT in my mind that I made the wrong decision moving to Atlanta. I'm searching for jobs right now, and looking to move to Miami Beach (yes, I've been to South Florida, and I know all about the materialism there... ), however I think Miami Beach has a different vibe than mainland Miami.
Anyway, so far in Atlanta, my favorite thing has been the Tara theater, it shows more obscure, "indie" films. It's great.
As for things to do on weekends, back when I was in Florida, if I was ever "bored" on a Saturday, I'd go to the beach... it wouldn't even have to be with other people, and it didn't matter which month it was. In Atlanta, there are outdoorsy things to do on the weekends (though NOT now, it's been cold since late November), but as a female, I wouldn't do them alone. I'd NEVER hike the Hooch trails alone, I'd never just hang out in one of the parks here. I dunno, I just don't feel comfortable here all by myself. I don't know what people do here on the weekends. I mean, how many times can you go to the aquarium? Or to the High? It really gets old and boring. Seems like the only thing to do is shop.

Thank you for the reply. As a young professional in South FL I find there is plenty more to do here than the (shallow) bar and club scene. Yes I like the beach, but I also enjoy strolling through some of the kitschy shops in downtown Hollywood, going to see bands play at Culture Room or Revolution in FTL (also Langerado Music Festival, an AMAZING 3 day festival) going out to dinner at a quality restaurant with a group of friends, cycling/hiking in the Everglades (Shark Valley), and there is a lot going on here in the way of festivals and the arts, more than ATL in my opinion. There is just "more going on", especially during the winter season when the weather is more mild. I don't know, there were some cool artsy intown neighborhood in ATL, but overall the biggest pastime to me there seemed like shopping, and my fav. activities are mostly outdoor activities that I prob. would not enjoy as much with the air quality issues in ATL.
Apologize for lack of eloquence. My keyboard is having some probs right now or else I would expand more. Point being, there is way more to do here than go to the clubs, anyone who calls South FL "Boring" needs to open their eyes.
During the summer, yes my activities become more beach and indoor oriented.
That theater sounds great, I wish I could find something like that here.

compelled, I completely agree with you. I've never (even in college) been into the club scene. It's funny because I'm pretty sure Gainesville's tried (so many times) to recreate some "clubs" for the South Florida kids who go to UF. I was just like..... what?
Anyway, I think climate also has a ton to do with it. When I moved here, I was like "Ohhh but it's STILL the south, and it'll be cool to have all 4 seasons". Yeah right, how stupid was I. With the warm weather in Florida, you can do all those outdoor things (festivals, outdoor concerts) all year round. God I miss that.

I don't think ATLs climate is bad at all. It's the air pollution that would ruin outdoor acvities for me. Summer is the worst there and yes I think it's worse than FL summer (that's when I spent my month) but it's at least not as long.
I wonder what happened to my keyboard. It's lagging and some keys are inconsistent...it is gettin very annoying or else i would have more to say. Anyway, I'm off topic, so I don't want to hijack the therad anymore. I think Atlanta is a very green city that offers a lot of opportunity and a high quality of life for your money.

Coming from the New Orleans area I LOVE Atlanta's weather. I don't think it's too cold to be out right now. I LOVE IT! Back home I had to stay inside starting in April and lasting through November. It was just nasty, suffocating hot.
But here, when the weather is like it is now I really enjoy my walk to work because I don't sweat too much and feel all energized and ready to take on the day. Even the summers here are mild, to me....

I agree with you. I am in northwest florida and it is probably twice as boring as south florida. I mean there is barely anything to do besides the beach and hanging out at walmart lol. The only jobs that educated youngsters here can get are really just doctor's and lawyers so they all usually move away to big cities if they want more or just stay here and settle for less. And who wants to go to the beach all day and everyday? And who can afford to? Idefinately plan on moving back to atlanta by this summer because florida is too boring for me.

Also we have the slowest malls of all because you can barely get any real high designs down here and I really love upscale shopping. And I know I am gonna have a blast going to lenox and other malls in atlanta.

hahaha, there are many, many people who want to be at the beach all day everyday... if that wasn't true, then places like California and Florida wouldnt be a retirees paradise. Water does amazing things. Though, it also brings hurricanes.

See, I like the beach, but it's not a place where I want to go and feel relaxed and comfortable. It's more like a spa, where if I overindulge in it I will regret it. When I want to feel comfy and relaxed I go hang out on my porch in the Spring and Summer and watch people while having a cocktail in one hand and a good book in the other.
I spent every summer growing up at Navarre Beach. I loved it but I'm not miserable not having a beach close by. The trees in Atlanta do for me what the beach in Florida probably does for you.
