Yes, that's right: the new MLS expansion team will be called Atlanta United FC.

The official unveiling of the team identity, colors, uniforms, and so on will be on July 7, but the name has been all but confirmed.

Cue everyone griping over why their favorite name wasn't picked. Seriously though, Terminus FC was kinda cool to me...

It's better than some of the names they suggested.

Why do soccer teams go out of their way to pick "european sounding" names?

What makes it a 'European sounding' name? Ignoring the fact that soccer was invented in Europe, most professional soccer teams around the world have names that use a similar convention.

I see it as a difference of the culture between the sport of soccer and other sports popular in the USA.

That being said, Atlanta United is a little bit of a vanilla name.

This isn't an Atlanta sounding name. I liked Terminus better.
