New Underground Atlanta Renderings Cause (Unwarranted?) Ire - Curbed Atlanta

Quote:
While the drawings exhibit some pretty terrible urbanism, if you can call it that, anyone who's lost their head over this might not have been justified in doing so.

We've reached out for clarification, but in the meantime, here are a few important notes about the drawings:
  1. The parking lot that appears in the hand drawing is one that already exists, potentially indicating that initial plans call for the parking lot to remain a placeholder as the first round of development materializes.
  2. Upon closer inspection of the drawing that's attracting the most consternation — well, it seems that it's merely the black and white version of a drawing that's been floating around since June 2014.
  3. The color drawings show a building on the site of the parking lot that is shown in the 2014 drawing, hinting that WRS has gone back to the drawing board to beef up the urbanism of the proposal. (Hypothetical high-five!)
  4. While the newer renderings show the preservation of the facades of historic buildings along Alabama Street — some of the oldest surviving in Atlanta — it's unclear if the buildings are truly safe from the new development, or if WRS only intends to keep the facades (or worse, is merely quieting critics by showing the facades in drawings, without actually intending to keep them).

I, too, would like come clarification from WRS. Hopefully, with enough time to let Tim Keane get at it for some revisions. A lot of those later renderings look much better, and I hope they keep the old storefronts as actual storefronts, and not just building decoration.

It's been hilarious to watch the ****storm get kicked up over the outdated renderings with the parking lot, a solid 5 days after this forum had already found the updated plans. Atlanta's alternative local media is... trying, I guess. They should really just read City Data, though.

Why doesn't everyone just read CD and get their ideas from here? Hell we don't need a planning dept, Tim Keane just just needs to read CD.

It's a mural; it's a person of color being used as a soda bottle, and the straw is sucking out all of the color. It's a protest piece against gentrification.

I interpreted it as a critical of religion.

But I'd say Underground and that area could use a lot more gentrification.

In this case, if it means filling in the parking lots, then sure.
