Legal issues surrounding the sale of Underground Atlanta -- it's a complex topic that gets a good writeup here. It's a fascinating read if you're into this stuff. There are a couple of points that could stand clarification, though.
1.) "In late 2016...a neighborhood activist group threatened to file a lawsuit, hoping to derail the deal over concerns about the development plan. That slowed down the closing, while the city had to step back and address their concerns...The group, the Atlanta Downtown Neighborhood Association, ultimately withdrew its threat of a lawsuit thanks to an agreement with the city that called for public comments during the redevelopment process."
Clarification: the intent was not to "derail the sale." The intent was to allow locals to have a voice in the abandonment of neighborhood streets, after they'd been ignored in a process that had included zero engagement. It's something that should *not* have required legal action to achieve. Thanks again to all who contributed money to this effort.
2.) "The city...wanted to ensure that pedestrian and bike access remained on some of those streets it conveyed to the developer, and so Williams and his team had to create easements in order to accommodate that."

And no right to speak as to the shape of your city, either, it would seem.

The suburbs are constantly copying ideas first tried in Atlanta, so I think it's time Atlanta did the same for things that work well in the suburbs. Avalon in Alpharetta would be a great model for underground to follow with the redevelopment.

Avalon is just Atlantic Station, minus the towers.

So? What's wrong with it? It's clean, safe, and has great options for both middle and high end shopping and dining.

Avalon= no transit service.
AS= nothing, I go there for shopping, events, and movies but only using MARTA and the shuttle.
