why do all our new developments have to be:
-anchored by national corporations instead of local startup businesses
-geared to pull in a wealthy demographic group from the outside instead of the existing population
-controlled environments with a list of rules a mile long to stifle creative expression and use of space

it's like, we want to have a city where everyone looks and acts the same and our government and the corporate class determine what we will enjoy. that's not a city, it's an insect hive where you get to live the life of an ant.

This isn't just an issue in ATL, this is happening across the world, go to developed areas of most cities and you'll see many of the same chains/stores, corporatization, etc.

i'm aware, and i'm stunned that there seems to be little to no alarm that we're sacrificing our economic and personal freedoms, right to self-determination, and individuality to feed this beast.

National chain scan pay the rent that many of these large developments charge based on lending requirements.

We need to lower the barrier of entrance for small businesses, and increase the loans / options for locals to open up their own businesses.

But a new addition to the Atlanta market is taking the flexible office concept a step further, introducing “pop-up” offices throughout intown neighborhoods that can be rented on a per-use basis

Post-Office Cowork will unveil its first local digs at Underground Atlanta later this month in an old building on Pryor Street. Plans call for more spaces to follow, though their potential locations aren’t yet known.

After community input, WRS is moving away from large-scale grocery store and surface parking. Community engagement at work!
Quote:
“WRS has moved away from having a mega-grocery store along Upper Alabama – once a community concern that Underground would become a project for big box retailers. It now is considering going with either one 40,000-square-foot grocer or multiple 10,000-square-foot or smaller retailers.”

“WRS also has shifted away from having surface parking as part of the development. And it will not have parking in Kenny’s Alley, traditionally the entertainment section of Underground which is now the location for The Masquerade music venue.”

Awesome! Good job Atlanta! This isn't NIMBY, this is just smart, progressive thinking.

40,000 sqft is still pretty good. That's about the size of the whole foods at Midtown Place, and larger than both the Trader Joe's at Midtown Promenade and the Publix at North and Piedmont.

A good size, I think. Large enough to service the area, but not too big.

WRS releases block-by-block update
Quote:
Block 1: Northwest corner of Pryor and Upper Alabama
Higher density hotel, office, retail and additional housing will be the last phase of the four-block transformation.

Block 2: Northeast corner of Pryor and Upper Alabama
Featuring student housing from development partner Peak Campus and multi-family housing from partner Prestwick Companies, more than 800,000 square feet of new construction will begin on this block in fall 2018, with an estimated delivery date of fall 2020 and early 2021 respectively. Both buildings will feature a mix of street-level retail focused on the needs of the neighborhood and Georgia State University’s growing student body. Between block 1 and 2 there will be nearly 175 thousand square feet of retail space to add neighborhood necessities and conveniences to the mix.

Block 3: Southwest Corner of Central and Alabama
Filled with a mix of retail, office and communal areas to support a 24/7 lifestyle, a more extensive rehabilitation of older buildings and other existing structures of Block 3 will begin in early spring 2018. The lower level of Underground Atlanta closed on Aug. 13 to assess the condition of the central hub, utility set up and structural safety. Block 3 is also the permanent home of The Masquerade and the recently announced coworking pop-up Post-Office Cowork at 86 Pryor.

Block 4: Southwest corner of Pryor and Alabama
More than 40 thousand square feet of retail storefronts line Upper Alabama to Peachtree Street and currently house many long-term Underground Atlanta tenants who relocated from the now-closed lower level to continue day-to-day business above ground.
