Piggly Wiggly sounds country.

Is it a good look for the city to have anything with "Dixie" in the middle of downtown?

I guess whatever goes in down there should ban Dixie Crystals sugar from their shelves as well.

I think that Piggly Wiggly is the most fun to say grocery store name in America! Chiming/ rhyming sounds are great marketing. Probably why it is one of the oldest name plates in our country.

Harris Teeter Stores when they were all over Metro Atlanta were marketed as "upscale" with "superior service". Their stores that I visited here really reminded me more of a Publix....Whole Foods they were NOT. By the way, I don't mean that to be an insult. "Whole Paycheck" is NOT what a revamped Underground Atlanta needs. They need a "for real though" grocery store by ANY NAME to truly be a successful "live/work/play (and, yes, grocery shop)" district. 99% of people in Metro Atlanta do NOT regularly shop at "specialty grocers" under any banner; they shop at "regular" grocery stores (clean with a nice selection and perhaps a nice bakery/ deli department). You realize that over two decades ago, when my wife was single living in the William Oliver Building right at Five Points that she, along with the rest of the residents of Downtown Atlanta, had to go to Ponce de Leon to access a "regular" full service grocery (and no, the "baby" Kroger that used to be across from City Hall on Central Avenue nor Dayan's sufficed) Fast forward to today, NOTHING has changed, except for the demise of "baby" Kroger has made the situation even MORE untenable.

Underground Atlanta needs a "REAL" grocery store, period.

Oh, and Winn-Dixie, despite how ANYONE feels about the name, is on life support and continues to shrink closing many stores. Winn-Dixie once had many stores in Metro-Atlanta (I grew up with the one in Lake City on Jonesboro Road) They disappeared decades ago along with the likes of Cub Foods, Big Star, A & P, Food Giant, etc. The real victim of Winn-Dixie's troubles seems to be the State of Florida; almost a total Publix monopoly with the high prices and bad coupon policies to match.

I agree that what downtown needs is a solid, cover-all-the-bases grocery retailer and not a specialty grocer per se.
CWG, I think you need a Piggly-Wiggly T-shirt. I love mine.

Downtown is supposed to be trending urban. A "cover all bases" cheaper grocery store could not work, because it would require a large footprint. In addition, if it was to be used for general large grocery trips for families, it would require a huge parking lot too. I don't think that's direction we should take with downtown at all. We don't need a huge Kroger/Walmart. Learn from what Fuqua did in Glenwood, a replica in Downtown would ruin it.

I think a specialty grocery would be great. It would be meant for grabbing small things, not main grocery shopping. Something like Dean and Deluca in NYC (but maybe a bit larger) would be perfect.

We need something everyone can afford.

A large grocery store doesn't have to be built like Glenwood, and it doesn't need a surface parking lot at all. There are plenty of larger grocery stores that fit well into urban locations. We've got a pretty big Whole Foods coming to Midtown at Icon.

With that being said, the people fixing up Underground have made it clear that they aren't going to have a "big box" grocery store. They are planning on having a small specialty grocer, and a medium sized national grocer. That doesn't rule out Kroger or Publix in a smaller footprint. Sprouts would be a good fit too, imo.

I don't think a "full-sized" grocer would be a good fit in the current buildings of Underground. But one would help people live their life in the neighborhood, if it were built into the base of a new large building, like the upcoming Kroger on Ponce. Having three grocery stores would be excellent for the neighborhood. I shop at four now: Kroger, Sprouts, Whole Foods and Sevananda. I live in Midtown and zero of those stores are within a reasonable walking distance.

Edit: Something like this rendering would work in a new building. I don't know the size of the rendered Kroger. A large grocer in a new building wouldn't need to take up all of the street presence either. There could be other retail spaces bordering the store.
