Sad, but true...I'm a native of ATL and if you watched the news 25 years ago, the typical murder story would have a backdrop of an inner city project or apartment complex. Today, that backdrop would be a middle class suburb.

The elderly are particularly vulnerable anywhere.

A woman I know had cancer, lived alone. Her home was burglarized and the impact was devastating. Just a statistic but it was a major trauma to this family.

I'm a real estate agent and I live in Lithonia. I can assure you that there is nothing ghetto about lithonia or the surrounding areas. As a matter of fact, Lithonia is one of the fastest growing areas in metro atlanta. Like any other community we have crime... Alpharetta has crime, buckhead has crime.. We have million dollar properties just like the rest of metro atlanta.. we also have a 10 million walking trail, parks and a ton of green space... A new water world with slides... we are 10 min from stone mountain park and 15 min from downtown...One of the most successful resturants in metro Atlanta is Arizona's... It happens to be black owned....does that matter.... I can assure you that there is nothing ghetto about the eastside.

Stone Mountain when I moved here in 1984 was an extremely sought-after and desireable area to live. Now people avoid it.

I have a friend who live in Chicago, St.Louis, Miami, Charlotte and Ohio who all say they are going through the same urbanization in there cities. I have a friend who sold there house in Suburb Chicago to move intown recently. Alot of the "projects" have been torn down. Hubby and I hung out in midtown just saturday since he grew up here he showed me all the areas that used to be dreaded such as atlanta's fourth ward, virginia highlands, west end, east lake, etc. Now they are filled with new stores, and go to atlanta housing websites to see all the new areas they are "cleaning" up.
Hubby and I both grew up in the "suburbs" used to no buses, malls, lots of land however honestly some "suburbs" have changed.

I am also black...& I'm sorry but I have to totally DISAGREE with you. I've been living in the Decatur/Stone Mountain area since 03 & am moving to the Dunwoody/Sandy Springs area at the end of May. I have seen the area definately DECLINE since I've been living there. I feel like the area has turned into a real life rap video & I do not want to live like that!! 90% of it is ghetto period. Since the projects have been torn down, this is where ppl have migrated too. (I'm not talking about the city of Decatur/Avondale Estates area, I'm talking about the suburban parts.) The homes are cheaper, the rent is cheaper, & many of the people seem like they just don't care. I hear thumping bass daily, gunshots in the distance a lot of nights, & "lil john" wanna be's walking around daily. As a working professional, I feel like I should be able to sleep in peace at night & feel at least 85% safe. YES there is crime in the Dunwoody/Sandy Springs area, but I certainly will feel safer then in Decatur/Stone Mountain. For me its not a black/white thing it's a safety peace of mind thing.

I told my real estate agent I wanted to move there, he said " Are you sure? It's not a good area" I said OK> Nevermind. I definetly took his advice. Go To Kennesaw or Acworth or close to city like Marietta.

I have serious doubts about there being a significant number of "yuppies from Alpharetta" moving to places like Edgewood. My experience is that they are recent college graduates or "yuppies" transplanted from Northern cities who have never lived in a suburb. And it is the politicians (who the long time residents probably voted for) who decide what the tax rates are, not the people who dared to move into and improve a once blighted area.
