Recently saw a map of the original plans for MARTA, which is what the voters originally approved in 1971. The stub extensions were built along with the tunnel north of Arts Center, so some prep is done. Obviously it would be expensive as it would need to be almost entirely tunneled. How much would this two station extension cost?

But it does set up for further expansion north, maybe which could head up towards Cobb eventually. I think this would be better than Proctor Creek as it hits Midtown and Downtown in a more direct fashion. Lots of good potential stations along the way too. Station under I75 @ Howell Mill with pedestrian access on both sides of the interstate, that area needs some transit. Station maybe at Underwood Hills then pop out along the RR tracks going north. Fantasy land, yes I know.

A few hundred million easily, especially since the area has been built up quite a bit since 1971.

I'd love to live right down the street from the Brookwood station though.

If they were going to do something like that, they should do it a little further north, perhaps about Peachtree Battle and West Wesley. Those areas are pretty dense with a lot of employment. Maybe even follow Peachtree for a while. Either cutoff at I-85 after Arts Center or at Lindberg.

Every estimate I've seen on tunneling starts at $100 million + a mile. And that's just the extra for tunneling.

Couldn't this spur line be built above ground once it reaches I-85? I just hate the prospect of having to tunnel...at all...it is soooo damn expensive through our incredibly hard rock.

Well, maybe, depends where you'd pop out. Would you go under the MARTA tracks and the over I-85? Personally, if they tried to do that kinda deal, i'd want them to just run it up to Cumberland, Cobb be damned, and leave nice big, obvious tracks pointed down Cobb parkway.

The original plan was to pop out near the existing tunnel portal and go over the MARTA tracks and I-85. Unfortunately, the alignment north of I-85 towards 26th Street called for cut-and-cover construction for the station and tunnel that would've likely wiped out a ton of homes in the Brookwood and Brookwood Hills neighborhoods:

Not sure a 2 station stub would be worth it. You are talking a lot of money to build a bridge over I-85, without disturbing the traffic and railroad.

Connect 400 North EWE Alignment High Estimated Cost: $2,325,484,434 for 64,642.85 ft of right of way. (Pages 4-47 and 4-32 respectively)

That gives us ~35,974 $/ft of right of way. Tunneling is ~$100 Mil. per mile extra, so that gives an extra ~18,939 $/ft
For my guestimations, we'll be using 36,000 $/ft and 19,000 $/ft respectively.

So I mapped out what the route would look like in Google earth, and got the following:

Quote:
3,300 ft Tunnel Arts Center to I-85
770 ft Aerial over I-85
3,370 ft Tunnel from I-85 to I-75
2,930 ft Aerial/At Grade over I-75 to Northside Drive

Total: (10,370ft ROW * 36,000 $/ft) + (6670ft Tunnel * 19,000 $/ft)
Total Est. Cost: $500,050,000
Going from there up to Cumberland:

Quote:
31,830 ft Aerial w/ cross overs for rest of I-75
4,940 ft Tunnel under Cumberland CID

Total: (31,830ft ROW * 36,000 $/ft) + (4940ft Tunnel * 19,000 $/ft)
Total Ad. Est. Cost: $1,239,740,000
Quote:
Total Est. Cost to Cumberland: $1,739,790,000

The stub tunnels already exist north of Arts Center.
Also, Collier deserves a station and maybe even Moores Mill.

They do, but I'd imagine they would need a bit of refurbishment and prep work to get them ready. AS for adding stations, the cost per foot I got from the Connect 400 study included the stations (I think, they weren't super clear). So, as long as you keep the count ~5 it shouldn't be too bad. Maybe an extra few million or so.
