Considering the move??!!
alright, i've been reading other posts on this site of people who are considering the move to Atlanta; but here are my specifics and your FIRST HAND knowledge would greatly be appreciated.
I'm mid thirty's male and single, will be earning around 75-80K per year at a job at the airport in Atlanta, I need to live fairly close to the airport since i have never liked long commutes. I want to live in a fairly nice neighborhood that has a little of everything-- ie. decent shopping, ( i love COSTCO ) maybe a few parks, places to meet people (females ) coffee shops, good places to eat,
essentially I need Los Angeles ( where I currently live) without the crime and attitude.......I would prefer a younger crowd.
when researching housing, I've seen decent places in Riverdale, Morrow...which are fairly close to the airport but I'm not sure how these aresa rank with the above criteria.....thanx in advance>>>>>>>>

sorry jack, those two places you listed seem less than desirable for someone like you. Atlanta's crime is also less than desirable. Why do you want to leave California? I understand wanting to leave LA...

Welcome to Atlanta! I'm from West LA went to Santa Monica HS and grew up in Ladera Heights & Marina Del Rey.
I think you would enjoy the Midtown or Buckhead area. You wouldn't need to live near the airport (And Morrow & Riverdale both don't have what your looking for in any sense of the imagination) since you can ride Marta MARTA - Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority from your home in which would need to be walking distance for convience purposes, It's a nice ride from any Marta Station north of the "NORTH AVENUE Station".
You will find the perfect hybrid of the scene/accomodations and transportation oppurtunities you seek similiar to Los Angeles. I think you should come here and rent for 6 months to a year. There are plenty of condos in midtown you could choose from on craigslist craigslist classifieds: jobs, housing, personals, for sale, services, community, events, forums. You could even sub-lease a place already furnished so you can come here without the hassle.
In closing definately would suggest Midtown plenty of authentic bars and clubs and shopping all within your fingertips and it's not spread out, very centralized with alot of adjoining neighborhoods to check out like Atlantic Station, VAHI, Poncey Highlands, Little Five Points & Downtown & Castleberry Hill.
Buckhead is more of a corporate/yuppie scene but they have what your looking for as well but without the authentic cool of Midtown & surrounding areas that are more accessible than living in Buckhead.
Let me know if you need anymore help !

The great thing about Atlanta's airport compared to many other cities is that it's located within 5-7 miles of Downtown. Also, if you were to commute to the airport from the city, you would be going against traffic and could make the trip between Downtown and the Airport is 10 minutes or less. That being said, you have a lot of options in terms of neighborhood choice.
If you want to live in a walkable community with that income, you should check out Inman Park, Little 5 Points, East Atlanta, and even Midtown. These areas have a younger population, they're some of the more walkable communities in Atlanta, and offer a lot of options in terms of shopping. Also, they're located along the MARTA line and have quick access to the freeway. With your salary, you will have a lot of options in terms of rent. If you choose to buy, you will have a lot of options in regards to condos in thsese areas. Good luck!

Atlanta's Finest nailed it. For what you're looking for, these areas would be better for you and the MARTA is an easy ride to the airport.

Thanx alot, this is already very helpful to me.........and for the guy asking why leave Cali.....I dont realy want to, but my job is currently at LAX, 75-to 80K a year may be decent money in Atlanta but in Los Angeles, it realy is almost peanuts.............I'm in the Hawthorne-Gardena area, these areas are slighlty less than middle class, where a home biult in the 60's with 2bd/2baths can run easily $500K...............as someone posted who lived in the West LA, Santa Monica Area BUYING a home of the same size, could cost easily 800-1mill. but thses are very nice areas of Los Angeles, plenty of shopping choices, places to dine, clubs...etc.........shelling out 3thou a month is a out of my range..........most of my single buddies at work live in 1 bedroom apts. and are paying on average 1,200 per month.............even in this declining market...............I dont want to go my whole life not owing a decent home.............thanx again

I'm very familiar with Hawthorne/Gardena/Lenox and Morrow & Riverdale are very comparable to those areas. That's why you shouldn't move there! You should be able to rent a NICE pad in Midtown for the price range your looking for. To buy a house in the same area would be more expensive but a 2bed 2 bath condo would certainly be attainable just on your salary alone. Good luck & PM me if you need any additional info on clubs, entertainment, restaurants and where to go when you get here!

Hi BIG.K,
Welcome to Atlanta!
Since your a young, single, gentleman I really suggest you get an apartment in Midtown. After you're there a year and have explored the neighborhoods that south-to-west and Atlantasfinest suggested you will know better where you really want to live.
But, from Midtown you can take MARTA all the way to work and live in a really cool area.
You will find that income goes pretty far here. What's your budget for a place?
