I live less than half a mile from a water treatment plant which for months at a time will have a "cracked lid that will take six months to replace". I don't even know what good air smells like any more.

Try freshening up your drain by putting baking soda down it then put boiling down it and leave it. Works for me. Keeps the drain cleaned out.

I have noticed this smell in some parts of downtown. The stench lasts for days. In fact, it seems worse after it rains.
