We will be visiting Athens in the near future as we prepare for retirement. We have extended family near Vinings and Decatur and have driven to Athens but not really looked seriously.
I plan to contact the Visitors Center as well as the OLLI/UGA for info as well. We are well educated individuals who are looking for opportunities to continue to learn, volunteer and play in a diverse, tolerant community. My husband would like to improve his golf game while I would like to bike, walk and do more outdoor activities. We would like to rent for a year to see how things go.
  • How hard would it be to assimilate into the community when we are not UGA alumni? I understand that many retirees are former faculty or have university ties.
  • Walkable neighborhoods that are not dominated by students. Opinion of 5 Points area?
  • Are there any 55+ retirement communities in the vicinity? My husband would like activities that are already planned vs. seeking them out.
Would appreciate any info you feel would be helpful as well.
Ready to get out of Chicago..............

I'm sure UGA has plenty of options for classes for retirees/retiree age. I don't know if it was UGA or somewhere else but I've heard of places that either let 55+ takes classes for free or for a heavily reduced cost. Might even be specific classes.

Just bumping up this thread because I, too, am interested in Athens.

Received a notification to your post since I originated the question. You might also consider Greenville, SC as another option to Athens. Best of luck!

Athens is always a reasonable option for retirees. I lived in Athens for several years until a few years ago, and would consider it as an option in retirement. Depending on what you want to spend, Five Points (most expensive and most walkable) to eastside neighborhoods that are convenient to local stores (grocery and restaurants) can be options. You can send me a message with specific questions.
