I rode MARTA a lot this weekend. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday it was knocking-it-out-of-the-park-great. There were large crowds but I felt like I barely waited more than 30 seconds any of those days for trains and thus none of them were too overly packed (besides some going the other direction to the Kickoff Game at peak pre-kickoff time). But still very impressive, fast orderly service, and clean environment.

However, yesterday (Monday) was the other extreme. It may have just been bad timing but since they were running holiday schedule I had to wait more than 10 minutes for all the trains, including connections. On top of that there was a lot of trash around and roving bands of kids that seemed to be just wondering around looking for trouble: Hundreds of teens pack Underground Atlanta, fights reported

I feel bad for anyone that decided to try MARTA for the first time on Labor Day, I doubt they will return.

Although I haven't had the opportunity to ride MARTA since living here, in my days (30 years) of riding the subways in NYC a 10+ minute wait on a holiday (or non-rush hours) was not uncommon. Now the roving bands of kids looking for trouble reminds me of the NYC subways back in the early 1980's (everyday).

What were they doing?

Quote:
An Atlanta Police spokesperson told the station a 15-year-old girl received a laceration to the head, but was going to be OK. No other injuries were reported.
Sad that a girl got hurt, but just one injury doesn't sound like mass chaos or anything.

Were there no Chewbaccas or storm troopers to keep the peace???

As the article hints at, I think the free-fare day yesterday was a factor in many of the problems. Kids didn't have school so they took advantage of no fares to "joy-ride" on MARTA all day long and look for something to entertain themselves with. Other places where free transit systems have been tried run into these same problems.

Exactly, there are more important things to worry about than a fight at an aging tourist attraction that is set to be sold to a private developer.

Atlanta actually only had 1 murder in all of August. Actually really impressive considering the size of the city and the history of violence.

Yesterday was pretty terrible when it came to teenagers on the train! I am usually not bothered about teenagers being kids but those teenagers had to be the most disrespectful, loud mouth teenagers I have every came across on Marta. They were cussing, clowning, rowdy, singing excessively loud, pants were you can see there butts and prints & some did not bother to put deodorant or soap on. I had to hold my breathe sitting next to one of them. One was pushing another one so that she can bump into the passengers exiting and leaving. I felt pretty uncomfortable and I never feel uncomfortable around passengers esp not teens.

Nevertheless; It still will not deter me from riding Marta.

I think we need a program for teens about how to properly behave in a social setting!
