Peachtree Street in Midtown Streetscape and Complete Streets Project (2015, landscaping)

Peachtree IV

This effort is the last in a series of four streetscape improvement projects along Peachtree Street that have been completed since 2005. These latest Peachtree Street enhancements between Ponce de Leon Avenue and Pine Street include new sidewalks, pavers, ADA ramps, pedestrian light-poles, expanded tree wells, new bike racks and landscaping. Construction will begin later this fall.

Edit: Wow, look at how tiny and narrow those sidewalks on the right are today. Reminds me of this:

I commute on my bike up that stretch of Peachtree everyday. While the enhancements look really nice, I'm worried about that far right lane (northbound) being taken away. People FLY down that section of Peachtree, and nobody is ever parked or driving in that far right lane. It feels much safe to be on a bike in that lane than in the other two. I wish the far right lane was converted to a cycle track or a bike lane, and connected to the new bike lanes that span the bridge over the connector (which by the way do wonders in making me feel safer biking over there). I know the sharrows are there, but I don't think many drivers pay much attention to them. Here's to hoping that the enhancements include some things that will make people slow down.

By narrowing the street, it will make drivers feel like there is less clearance and therefore research has shown that they slow down. A wide road makes drivers speed.

The rendering makes it look like they'll wind up with two bike lanes and two car lanes.

Is that correct?

I actually bike that way as well, it's highway, but rending seems promising. Removing the northbound lane will do wonders for reducing traffic on both sides. Also, rendering has a much needed light on renaissance between Linden and Pine. A cycle track would be nice, but this is a part of the plan. I can also see the Pine St Shelter days are limited, this is no man's land for pedestrians.

Those look like sharrows, meaning that bikes and cars travel in a mixed lane. It's basically just a reminder to drivers that people on bikes deserve to be in the lane as well. Not an actual solution to bike infrastructure IMO.

It might be better to narrow the lanes, add bike lanes along the curb, then three traffic lanes, with the eventual expectation that the outer traffic lanes will become streetcar only.
