$1200 in Midtown will get you a poverty apartment. If you want a reasonable quality of life, not surrounded by a ghetto element, you'll likely need $1800+. But then again, some people like that environment. I don't. I hope this helps. You should think safety first.

You can rent in Reynoldstown or Cabbagetown for your budget. Crime is low, it's right on the BeltLine, and it's 10-15 minutes to downtown without having to get on the freeways. Parts are accessible by MARTA (Reynoldstown) or the Streetcar (Cabbagetown). I moved here from a small town and love it; it's a tight knit, quiet neighborhood in the middle of the city.

There are plenty of other people who are just like you that moved to Midtown. It is convenient to everything and allows you the option to take MARTA downtown to work. There are great networks of YP in Midtown for you to find like minded people.
