The Dangers Of A White Mayor Of Atlanta « CBS Atlanta

ETA: Read past the first few paragraphs.

Quote:
Back in 2009 there was a palpable fear sweeping through Atlanta’s political establishment. A confluence of economic and demographic shifts raised, for the first time in generation, the specter that Atlanta may have a White mayor.

It wasn't my intention to keep those out, but to get people to read the full thing.

A better question should be why is the author just focused on 'black' people and not Hispanic, Asian, Indian, etc?

So so almost 44 years of Black leadership and he is not satisfied with the results? Would another 44 years make any difference?

There is much needed diversity in the city government because right now it isn't very diverse at all and that is where the problem lies. I remember an article in the AJC where they said 80% of elected and city government employees were black. Where is the diversity? How did that happen? You have to fix that first.

Hmm. A bit exaggerated, but he does have some interesting observations. However, I don't think any mayor can solve his "top down growth" conundrum.

We've had some excellent black mayors and some not-so-good black mayors. We've had some excellent white mayors and some not-so-good white mayors.

In a truly progressive city one would hope that at some point we can move beyond characterizing our politics in racial terms.

The headline sounds prejudice, but if you read the entire article the message is Black or White mayor doesn't matter as much as that mayor's agenda and policy.

Atlanta could use a good Republican Mayor (of any race).

Why does it matter if the person is competent and gifted to run a city? It is so time people stop thinking Atlanta is for one race, furthermore as black Atlantan events like Freaknik was disgraceful and definitely not a part of my heritage.
