Atlanta’s bike share program rolling along | AJC

In less than two months, Relay logged 2,193 trips covering a total of 4,386 miles. That’s an average of about 40 trips per day, according to data from the bikes’ GPS units. Those numbers are on track with projections, said CycleHop CEO Josh Squire. Ridership is expected to increase when the summer heat subsides.

Many of those trips and miles are used to fill what transit experts call the “last-mile problem,” getting to and from existing transit or making the small trips where a train ride or car trip isn’t necessary.

Atlanta rolls out aggressive expansion of bike share program

City officials are already are pleased with Relay’s ridership. From June 9 through Oct. 20, 1,400 people took 4,000 trips totaling 9,200 miles.

“I’ve been thrilled by the response,” Katz said, adding those numbers have exceeded ridership goals. “People are using them, and people are going far on them. It’s been really powerful and really positive.”

Based on the number of trips and the distance covered it sounds like folks are using these bikes for short hops, which I assume is just what was intended.

Here is a dumb question. Say you MARTA to a station near your home but you still had two miles to go. Could you rent a bike and take it home and bring it back the next morning or would have to bring it right back?

You could lock it up in the public ROW and pay $2 fee for locking outside of a bike share hub. If you claimed it in the morning, you would earn $1 credit if returned to a bike share hub.
