Exciting news, but it is still years off.

Man, once this is in place, the dream of the Beltline will really be tangible.

The goal is to have the entire project finished by 2030. Given the progress being made, I feel that's extremely ambitious, but the Georgia legislature recently gave the Beltline permission to seek private investment, so maybe they can finish it in time with P3s.

he Beltline still doesn't own the Southside Trail corridor. CSX Corp., whose trains ceased using the route last year, does. The Beltline hopes to acquire the necessary Southside Trail land by 2018, using a mix of federal, tax allocation district (TAD) and private funds.
From the comments:

I attended the 'Beltline Network hosting Community Forum on Developing the SE Beltline Corridor' on 11/4 and was very disappointed. It lasted an hour and a half or so and very little about the actual SE trail was discussed. We learned a lot about the actual panel members (about a half hour worth) and what the Beltline is (you know, because we don't know what the thing is). I got two things out of this forum:
1. ABI and APS are working very closely to resolve the issue between the two. Both groups inherited the current situation (no one at either was there when the initial agreement occurred) and while the media has pictured the two groups with fists up, they are actually working together on this. Both ABI and APS had folks at this forum.
2. The design phase plus acquisition of the property from CSX (apparently CSX invited Beltline folks to their Jacksonville office sometime soon to discuss this) will take three years with ground breaking occurring at that time. Since this is the longest leg of the trail in terms of length under construction at the same time, it will take 2+ years to complete. So 2023 (if the schedule holds) before the Eastside Trail and the under construction Westside Trail connect.

Atlanta Beltline Officials Strike Deal for Eastside Trail Extension and Southside Trail Design. Hurray! - Beltline Beat - Curbed Atlanta

In other news, Kimley-Horn has been chosen to head up the design of the Southside Trail. Previously, the firm consulted on the Westside Trail design, which helped the city acquire TIGER grant funding for the project. That process could be especially interesting as the design team will have to integrate its work with whatever Fuqua Development does near Glenwood Place.
