Before I get too excited, can someone explain exactly what this means? I thought environmental assessments and everything had to be completed before any design was done, and before that, the railroad had to sell the land to the Beltline. I'm extremely excited to see SOMETHING come out regarding the Beltline through Grant Park, but I don't want to get my hopes up if this is just one of those RFPs that results in some cool images, and no action.

Yeah, the last train ran on that track at least 18 months ago. The rail lines are already overgrown. CSX has been going through the lengthy federal process to officially "abandon" the line. But as far as I know CSX still owns it. I guess the Beltline is trying to get a jump on things.

Boy, wouldn't it be nice of them (and their public image here in the city) if, instead of abandoning the ROW, they just handed it over to the Beltline? I don't know if there is a cost or legal reason why they can't do that, but it would save ABI some loops to jump through I feel.
If there're legitimate reasons as to why they shouldn't then that's fine too.

I think they are planning to sell it to the Beltline. But there is some official federal "abandonment" process it has to go through first so it is no longer a freight rail line. But yeah, would be great if they gave it over for free.

That's what I was curious about. Selling the land aint too bad either, as long as it's getting done. Who knows, we might see ABI calling in the #BoardtheBeltline people sooner than later to set up temporary trail work.
