How do the Atlanta City schools and surrounding counties go about the hiring process? Do teachers interview at individual schools and decided upon by the principal or does a central office assign them to a school?

In most cases, the principals do have the final say-- though the system may offer you a contract. I believe you can be hired by a principal and then the system has to approve you. Rarely, is staff just assigned, except in cases where one school is overstaffed (based on enrollment) and one is understaffed.

If I'm looking to get a job should I go contact particular schools I am interested in first and give the principal my resume?

I think that is a good strategy. What level (middle, high, etc)?

A good source would be to find out when they are having a job fair. They usually have one in March or April. Keep checking their website for the information.

Fill out the online application first, then email the principals of schools you are interested in.

Thanks! I am looking for an elementary school position. I have taught in Charlotte and Charleston, SC and every county seems to have its own way of doing things. I wanted to make sure that contacting specific school was acceptable.

First, decide which county you would like to work in. Each county has its own school system and Atlanta also has a city system. Go to that county's school web site and apply (they will walk you through the process of what you need). When your application is complete, look at the job listing. When you see a school at which you would like to work, send the resume to the principal or contact person listed for that school. Hope this helps.

I am going to relocate from Jax. FL to Atlanta in July, 2008. I have taught in an elementary school in Jax. for ten years. I logged on to teachgeorgia.org and made an online resume that can be viewed by various school districts. You can also contact a representative at the Georgia Professional Standards Commision to help you determine what forms you need to complete to get a Georgia certificate since you already have teaching experience. This is what I did, and I just received mine on Thursday. The number is 1-800-869-7775. The address is: Two Peachtree St. Suite 6000 Atlanta, GA 30303. Research has shown Dekalb to be the highest paying county. However, natives refer to this as COMBAT pay. I don't really know how rough the schools are in this particular county, but best wishes to you!
