Man who caused trucks to crash off 285 bridge receives fine, probation
SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — The man who admits he caused a dangerous crash on I-285 will have to pay a hefty fine...The judge gave Silverstein a $500 fine, ordered him to take a defensive driving class and put him on probation for a year. "I'm increasing the fine because this was just an awful situation and I need you to pay more attention while you’re driving,” Dickson said.,,

I want to discuss what is considered a "hefty fine".

Now, you may remember back in late September that this man clipped the front of a Publix semi resulting in that semi and a gas tanker truck careening off 285 down to 400 which of course caused a chain reaction that [sarcasm]held up traffic quite a bit.[/sarcasm] but fortunately no fatalities.

Are you kidding me? You could rack up $500 ticket for failure to maintain lane with no accident or complete debacle like this was at all involved and just because a police officer had a wild hair that day. I would not call this a slap on the wrist moreso than a friggin handshake or a fist bump.

Maybe my question is not so much whether his fine was fair, but since people get fined a lot more for a lot less and if those fines are fair? I know this is turning into a vent, but the use of "hefty" is just outlandish for describing the fine.

Also, if anyone knows the name of his attorney, I'd like to hear it in the event I cause something that breaks a bridge and clogs up two freeways.

I thought we would be talking 10s of thousands when it came to the fine. $500 fine is only like a few hundred more than speeding....are you kidding me? What if people died?

I read that this man has had 6 traffic citations in the past 5 years.

I'm sure it was an accident, but obviously this punishment is ridiculously lenient.

Was this guy messing with his phone?

If so I'd give him a $1 million fine, 8 years of hard labor and permanently ban him from driving.

It's like the baseline fine depending on the judge.

I read that as well of course but just left it out. I'm relatively certain it was an accident as well unless he's insane, but whether it was or was not does not seem to weigh heavily in courts. He definitely went the extra mile talking about his remorse but really give me some sort of small break about pretending that piddly fine is wayyyy above the norm.

Sarcasm at its best so thanks for the laugh - ha ha.

Look, I'm not saying that he should have been hauled off to a stockade with the townsfolk marching with pitchforks and torches behind him, but don't for one moment pretend like $500 was HEFTY FEE for what he caused. If my driving record looked like his (and that only includes the things I know about his), I'd not be under the jail.

We have "three strikes and you're out" for victimless drug crimes, but mandatory minimum punishments are conspicuously absent for dangerous and possibly life-threatening acts undertaken by motorists. Once a person has been cited that many times in such a short period, we should be suspending their license.

I agree. Total misuse of the word "hefty." Bad reporting/writing.

I'm only being slightly sarcastic. I'd be okay with a $50,000 fine and a permanent driving ban.

if people had died then the driver could have been charged with vehicular homocide or something similar. But still, since lives were put in danger why wasn't he charged with something like reckless endangerment? $500 isn't a hefty fine, it's a nod and a wink. You can get hit with more than $500 for something as simple as speeding over 85.
