Since you're semi-retired I think Decatur would be perfect for you. It's got a lot going one yet it's quiet.

Taylor ham is readily available either in pre-sliced boxes, or by the pound at the deli counter, so there's nothing to fear there..........lol.

The City of Decatur is different from Decatur mailing addresses in unincorporated DeKalb county (City addresses will be 30030 zip code, other areas will have a different zip code).
Decatur has frequent special events throughout the year and the city has an excellent and very informative web site:
City of Decatur, GA
You'll find a mix of single family homes, condos and some townhomes. Decatur is extremely popular so the prices there are relatively high, but perhaps since you are coming from New Jersey they won't seem that high by comparison.
If you'll give more details about what you're looking for and how much you're looking to spend, you'll get more precise answers about whether or not Decatur will be a good fit.

Decatur sounds perfect! Exactly everything I'm looking for. I don't have any children so the schools systems aren't too important except for maybe when it comes to resale but hopefully I will love it so much that I won't ever want to move. I will be having frequent visitors coming in from Scotland and being close to MARTA sounds like a great idea so that they can head out on their own to tour the city. Thank you.. you've made my day : )

I'm set now : ))) What don't they have that you miss the most from here? What about Panera Bread? Wendy's???If this housing market in NJ would just pick up...I'd be down tomorrow. It's really bad up here at the moment. Nothing is selling. A new const down the road from me that was originally listed at 800K...just sold for 650. How do you like living in GA?

They have Panera around...can't remember exactly where but I have seen one. I think there's one on N. Decatur Rd near Emory but it might be Atlanta Bread company. I pass it every day but never paid close enough attention.
I know there's a Wendy's in the Toco Hills shopping center on Druid Hills Rd (jsut outside Decatur city limits) but you won't go there when you can go to the Brick Store for pub food.
There's plenty of fast food around...

Still sounds great..but don't get me wrong, just because I'm looking to semi-retire, doesn't mean I'm old : ) Early 40's so a nice, community feel with some nightlife would be great.

We northerners do like to eat : )) My nephew who lives in Kennesaw told me about Atlanta Bread..saids it's better than Panera. Wendy's is more for the visiting Scots..they love them sqaure burgers for some reason : )

If they really want a good burger take them to The Vortex in Little 5 Points. You can take MARTA to the Candler Park or Inman Park station and walk to Little 5 from there.
Best burgers around, in my opinion.
I like both Panera and Atlanta Bread, though I don't think either is a really awesome place to eat.
Take your Scottish friends to The Brick Store in Decatur Square - the food is just pub food but the draught beer selection is hard to beat. And they have the best Belgian draught selection ever.
You're semi-retiring in your early 40s? Wow, you did something right! I'm early 30s and thinking retirement around 60...

In that price range, you'll be looking at condos or possibly townhomes in Downtown Decatur. Single family homes in that area are significantly higher. You can move out from the Downtown area and find single family homes that are still inside Decatur's city limits for that price range, but it would be a rare find downtown. If you're open to condos, you should have some good options and the advantage of being in the middle of downtown -- there are a number of condo buildings within a block or 2 of the square, ranging from traditional to very contemporary.
Also, there's an Atlanta Bread Company just off the square.

He should be able to find something in Winnona Park or Oakhurst in that price range, right?
