you need to post this on the Atlanta board -- Decatur, while it has its' own government, is really just part of Metro ATL

"Good area" for what, and compared to what? Decatur has some really nice areas, and some decent schools, but there are dozens of other areas in the Atlanta metro that meet those criteria. A bit more info on what you're looking for, what you're looking to spend, and most importantly, where you're going to work would get you better information.

The City of Decatur is a very popular area for young professionals to live because it's literally tucked into the side of Atlanta and has all the amenities of it's own city while being about 10 minutes from downtown Atlanta.
But, like Bob said, what are you looking for? There are lots of options.

Decatur
Well as a Real Estate professional, you may want to relook Decatur. They have great places to live downtown, but otherwise I wouldnt suggest it. The schools are not that great.

This is not true at all. City of Decatur schools are very good. There are some DeKalb County schools in Decatur that aren't so great, but north of the city of Decatur where the address is still Decatur but it's not in the incorporated part - the schools there are fine. It's south of the city limits where the schools get sketchy.

Decatur is a wonderful area! Of course, as the others have said, it all depends on what you're looking for. Downtown Decatur is like a cool, small college town. It centers around the courthouse square (which is ringed by shops and restaurants and has a MARTA rail station underneath) and extends out for several blocks. The City of Decatur is different from Decatur mailing addresses in unincorporated DeKalb county (City addresses will be 30030 zip code, other areas will have a different zip code).
Decatur has frequent special events throughout the year and the city has an excellent and very informative web site:
City of Decatur, GA
You'll find a mix of single family homes, condos and some townhomes. Decatur is extremely popular so the prices there are relatively high, but perhaps since you are coming from New Jersey they won't seem that high by comparison.
If you'll give more details about what you're looking for and how much you're looking to spend, you'll get more precise answers about whether or not Decatur will be a good fit.

Hey BobDidn't we cross paths a few times in NJ Threads : ))Well coming from NJ, I can afford a nice place down in Decatur. I looking between 250-350 range. Prefer new construction or nicely renovated - upgrade home. I'm attracted to Decatur because it sounds like a very diverse area - more like home (NJ). Finding a decent job is somewhat important but not too important as my move to georgia is part of my plan to semi-retire. And now for the big question, can you find taylor ham anywhere..lol : )
