Georgia's 2nd tier cities (except Athens and possibly Savannah) are just plain, repressed, pasteurized and boring.

They're conservative and repressed to such an extreme that they make even Atlanta's more conservative outlying areas look like San Francisco in comparison.

Very cliquish people.

Very few young professionals. Anyone there who's single with no kids past 22, good luck.

Not much of a middle class/not many people with college educations. Heck, even Olive Garden is considered fancy there.

Redneck/Ghetto mentality

Very little to do besides shopping and dining

That's not just in Georgia. It's also pretty lame to equate "traditional" and "conservative" as an inherently bad thing.

Because of Atlanta. Any rural-born free-thinking/interesting people generally all move here.

I changed the thread title to remove the political connotation. The reason i created this thread is because the 2nd tier city boosters on the Georgia forum are just ridiculous and misleading.
It's just plain misleading to act like their ONLY difference from Atlanta is less traffic.

I don't believe that description fits Augusta. No, of course we don't have the attractions Atlanta has, but that's because our metro area is 1/10th the size or less.

Augusta itself does not have a "redneck/ghetto" mentality. In fact, I believe we are fortunate to have a pretty forward-thinking community. It's a given that in the South religion and family tend to be omnipresent in social situations. That isn't unique to Georgia's 2nd tier cities.

Lastly, in my opinion, Augusta and the surrounding areas have a very healthy middle-class. The number of professional, white collar jobs has steadily increased in recent years. Columbia County is considered a pretty affluent area by most standards.

I think you may want to investigate a bit more before you lump all second-tier cities into a "plain and repressed" category. That's pretty unfair.

EDIT: And in no way do I mean to say Augusta is perfect. It is far from being perfect, but they do a lot of things right around here.

Yea a lot of areas across the country are like this. What hurts is lack of opportunity and lack of a name. People up here in PA don't even know that Columbus or Macon exist.

Yeah, I'm asking the same question myself and eagerly anticipating an answer from the OP. Everything he derided the 2nd-tier cities for being, Savannah absolutely IS NOT!

Let's break it down:

SAVANNAH: Very cliquish people?!
FACT: In 2015 named the No 10 Friendliest City in the world, No 2 in US

SAVANNAH: Very few young professionals. Anyone there who's single with no kids past 22 good luck?!
FACT: Huge creative class of millennials, artists, musicians and entrepreneurs from all over the world

SAVANNAH: Heck, even Olive Garden is considered fancy there?!
FACT: The Grey named one of the Top 5 restaurants in America by Esquire

SAVANNAH: Redneck/Ghetto mentality?!
FACT: Largest GLBT community in Georgia outside Metro ATL, home to the current reigning Miss Gay USA

SAVANNAH: Very little to do besides shopping and dining?!
FACT: Largest urban historic district in the nation welcoming 13 million tourists annually

Yes ... EPIC THREAD FAIL!

I said in the OP that Athens and Savannah were the EXCEPTIONS.
