Reed: City could handle $100M-$150M for Philips Arena redo | www.ajc.com

Great, let's keep throwing more money at sporting venues. Because clearly an arena that opened less than two decades ago is antiquated.

What does the ROI look like? How many years would it take the city to recoup that money?

Torn between not wanting to spend public money on sports teams and feeling disgusted by the idea of the Norcross (or wherever) Hawks.

I care a little bit less about rental car taxes than TAD funds.

So glad to hear that they "could handle" spending $150M on upgrading that facility, while refusing to make good on a contract to pay their own school district. Priorities are in order, obvs.

Pretty sure ownership of professional sports teams can see that public financing of this crap is going to be curtailed in the not-so-distant future. Gotta get while the gettin' is good I guess. This will make FOUR professional teams to get publicly-funded upgraded in the last 2 years in our city alone?

Anyone have any idea what the Hawks' economic contribution to the city is during a typical year?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Phillps Arena. It is one of the most profitable concert venues in the US. Personally I like the wall of suits as it allows the upper deck to be 30' closer to the court.

No idea. I'd be interested to know that, and also the economic hit the city would take from all the events that Philips won't be hosting while construction is underway.

Why did Gwinnett Arena, which holds 13,000 people (just 5238 fewer than Philips) cost $91.5 million to build from the ground up (in 2003) and Philips will cost 3-4 times that just to renovate?

Why? This is terrible. I can totally look past it if the NHL comes back though. Otherwise, I'm protesting
