"Ridesharing" in the context of Uber or Lyft refers to someone who owns a car sharing it with someone who needs a ride. Framing it as a kind of carpooling, getting paid to share your commute—vs. treating people as professional drivers—is how they avoided most of the laws and regulatory rules that apply to taxi and limousine services.

Leaked documents obtained by Bloomberg apparently show that Uber burned through a whopping $3 billion in 2016, and roughly $2 billion in 2015.

The company, Horan claimed, is covering nearly 60 percent of ride costs.

Take away its public support and see how long it lasts!

Ride-on-demand is on the rise and growing, and even the article you just linked held that opinion. Whether or not Uber is the leading company in that industry is totally beside the point. If they fail, somebody else will come in and pick up the slack, and probably do it even better.

Sure, but only if we take away the public support for the roads, too.

They are paid for by gas taxes. I don't think you got my point.

It might be the reason, Uber is in a headlong pursuit of driverless vehicles.

They are not entirely paid for by gas taxes, not even remotely close, nor are gas taxes even a direct user fee.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but your point was that public transit wouldn't survive without public support for expansion and operations. In our current state of operating transportation, I agree, but that's only because we prioritize roads.

So, I go back to my point. Take away public support for both transit and cars (roads), and let's see how each fair.

Of course, I'd rather just invest in both because such investment is better for us all, but that's not the discussion taking place.

Probably the best way to cover the costs. I agree that gas taxes should be raised.

Right. But I'm in some difficulty as to what Gulch was implying.

Uber is going on without public support. Which is more than can be said about transit. It's not about cars but Uber.

We're talking about autonomous cars and the discussion cited an article about Uber. Not cars in general.
