"A couple of reasons I wouldn't reduce this down to conservative vs. liberal is because (1) a conservative and educated city like Orem, UT is likely going to be a problem for many interracial families, "

Can I just say, I have lived in California, Arizona, and Utah...but I have never experienced racism like I did in Utah! Salt Lake, and all of the surrounding areas. Blatant racism.....I was there for 3 months and never went back!

Talking I'm back!!

I took hiatus from this forum while seeking info on possibly relocating to Phoenix or Las Vegas. All I can say is that if the responses in those forums are anything like those cities..I def don't want to be there. We def would NOT be accepted! We are back on our original plan to relocate to the ATL area when the eldest graduates from high school this year. Gwinnet Cty here we come. My sister lives in Douglasville/Lithia Springs area and loves it. Keeps telling me that Gwinnet Cty would be a mistake. I must admit we were visiting her in April and were impressed. My other half loves the Midtown areas d/t close proximity to everything but those areas do NOT seem affordable.

I'm black. I'm not married, but am in a 2-year relationship with my girlfriend, who is white. Although there aren't a lot of interracial couples here in Atlanta like there are in other areas, you will still see a few from time to time. In fact, my girlfriend and I are good friends with another interracial couple.

We currently live in the city where there is a more liberal vibe. Sadly though, if we get stares, they are usually from black women. But hey, love knows no color--who gives a damn what others think?

Atlanta is a very cosmopolitan city and has a progressive vibe. The suburbs are even really diverse as well and I think it's safe to say that the vast majority of folks are very accepting of interracial couples. What choice do they have anyway?

So where in the city do you live? What areas seem safe? I know we both liked the areas along Peachtree near Piedmont Hospital. We both decided that if we get RN jobs at Piedmont Hospital then we would like to live in that area so we won't have to battle traffic. I haven't done any research on that area but when we there earlier this year it seemed nice and everything you could possibly want is right there. If anyone has information regarding this area or hospitals let me know. Our problem is that we don't know which hospital system we want to go with: Emory, Piedmont, Tenet, VA, and others.

Don't rule out hospitals outside Atlanta - with so many retirees moving into N. Ga. from all over, there are new, well-equipped hospitals being built. Living conditions are better and there's less crime away from town.

First of all, rent for your first year of living here in order to get a feel for the city and to avoid making a committment in an area that you may not like.

I live in East Atlanta, which is an up and coming neighborhood south of Little 5 Points. The neighborhood has always been a solid middle/working class neighborhood and in the past 10 years, hipsters and yuppies have started to relocate there.

If you are working at Piedmont Hospital, you could look at the Lindbergh area, where there is a lot of transit-oriented development occurring. There are several new apartment complexes that have opened there, as well as new stores including Target. The Lindbergh Center MARTA station is there as well and is very convenient for going Downtown for special events or going to the airport. Lindbergh Drive would provide you with almost direct access to Piedmont Hospital.

Another area to look is of course the Brookwood area, which is the neighborhood where the hospital is located. There are a lot of apartments in and off of Peachtree that are decently priced and offer a lot of amenities.

If you want to get an idea for what's available in the Brookwood area, go to Apartments for rent - ApartmentFinder.com and search for apartments in the 30309 ZIP code.

Try picking up the Washington Post or New York Times(where police just shot another man to death, where they killed an unarmed african man and where the police sodomized a man with night sticks). When are people gonna wake up to what is around them and stop the stereotypes of one place?

Boston started busing, the riots happened in LA, Newark and ghettos are very much still a fact in philly, new york and southside chicago.
I would agree with carolinajack and add to his comments the large-majority white demographic states in the West such as CO and WY where there are people who have never even seen a person of color in the flesh. The racism there is based largely on the resulting ignorance coupled with negative stereotypes typically gleaned from television and the movies.

One older woman who hailed from the desolate wastelands of the WY interior actually told my (black) wife that "there are n*****s, and there are black people." The woman obviously considered this to be a compliment to my wife. When her faux pas was pointed out to her, she broke out in tears and apologized.
