Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport plans to officially allow Uber, Lyft and similar services to pick up passengers effective by July 1.

Hartsfield-Jackson general manager Miguel Southwell announced the plan to legalize operations by transportation network companies at the Atlanta airport in a proposal to be introduced to the Atlanta City Council March 30. He said the plan would be for the service to be introduced by July 1 of this year.

The Atlanta airport has not allowed Uber and Lyft to pick up passengers at the airport and has policed the curbside to attempt to prevent such pickups. However, some travelers have found ways around the prohibition.

Interesting. I didn't even know that they weren't allowed. I have been living in Atlanta for nearly a year, fly out of the airport once or twice a month and always use Uber without issue. Maybe I have just been lucky so far.

Well I mean I would assume there is no easy way for police to know that it is an Uber vs just a friend/relative dropping someone off.

Fantastic news!

We have some of the absolute worst taxis here that I have ever experienced anywhere. We always take the train, but have been stranded a couple of times over the years by delayed flights. The taxis we took both times were a nightmare - to put it mildly.

Hopefully passengers will tip Uber X and a Lyft drivers. It will be a $ 5 surcharge for drop off and pick up like Chicago O'hare and LAX.

I bet they'll build it into the price of the ride.

Uber didn't in Chicago and LA. I expect the same for Atlanta. It came out of drivers earnings, which has already been cut significantly for Uber X and Lyft.

Hmm. That seems counterintuitive.

I just took Uber to the airport on Tuesday. Why would there be a surcharge for the airport? If thats the case I would just do like I do on my return trips and have them take me to midtown Marta.

For me, Acworth to Airport is ~40, Marta to Midtown is $2.50, and then Midtown to Acworth is ~30
