I agree 100% with her.

Saving the library is not going to move Atlanta up a tier. That cinder block will probably move Atlanta down. It's already a homeless shelter so just complete the job.

It will in my estimation, and likely will in the international architectural community as well.
Not doing so will certainly render us a laughingstock to anyone with an ounce of artistic sensibility.

This announcement somewhat mitigates my sore feelings about the library 'renovation'.

Generally speaking I'm a staunch preservationist.

But I like the idea of letting more light into the library. In my (totally subjective) opinion, Brutalist architecture works best when it is set apart in a plaza or other area with lots of natural light. Otherwise it runs the risk of being drab and overbearing.

It just needs to be something new, maybe an art gallery, extension of the High Museum, Modern Art, not like there aren't museums downtown already.

I also think this city could desperately use a new/updated central library, but where the money will come is anyone's guess unless one of our rich friends at Home Depot, CFA, etc would like to help out.
