My family and I are planning to move to Atlanta this summer. I am hoping to buy a house within the next year thru a federal program available for teachers. You can only buy homes in certain zip codes. What can you tell me about Acworth, Austell, and Kennesaw (how do you pronounce that). Some of the zip codes are: 30101, 30102, 30106, 30168, 30144. What can you tell me about these areas, crime, schools, accessibility to downtown Atlanta, etc.

All I can tell you is how you pronounce Kennesaw -- KEN - uh - saw

Don't be silly. They're not anywhere near that far out. Just a few miles outside the perimeter. Probably a horrible commute into the city, but they are certainly all areas where a lot of people who work intown live because the prices are so much lower than intown.

Sorry, I have no idea what strange thing just happened. Acworth, Kennesaw and Austell are all located in Cobb County, which is one of the original five metropolitan county areas. Acworth and Kennesaw are in north Cobb. The sprawl and growth are the factors that have made commuting from these areas to downtown a nightmare. However, these are desireable areas for living. The small original downtown areas have been revitalized and have lovely shops and restaurants. Also, Lake Allatoona (more rain, please), Red Top Mountain State Park and Kennesaw National Battlefield provide area recreation. In addition, there are some nice local and county parks in the area. I grew up here and have recently returned. This is generally a safe area. I don't have any children in school, so I can't help with that. I do know that a brand new high school (Allatoona High) is slated to open this fall. It is located right on the Paulding/ Cobb line. The following is confusing to new residents. There are four counties with Acworth addresses -- Cobb, Paulding, Bartow and Cherokee. Your county services and schools will be based upon which county you actually live in. The original town of Acworth is in Cobb County. There is a nice mix of older homes and new developments to fit any pocketbook. This is a very suburban area with lots of shopping, strip malls, etc. I can't help much with Austell. It is closer to downtown (Southwest Cobb). One plus for the Acworth/ Kennesaw area -- although the service is very limited -- is the bus link that goes directly to midtown and hooks up with MARTA. It is in the growing stages regarding service, but it's better than nothing. Some of my neighbors work in midtown and this works out great for them. In Kennesaw, the most congested area is Barrett Parkway, which contains Town Center Mall. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need anymore specific information.

Yes but you just pay the extra in commuting costs. Id rather live further in and put that money into equity and have more free time.

I dont choose to live out there either. I choose by schools and amenities myself. It sounds like they dont have a large choice in the matter though with limited zips to choose from.
