My original question, no. Just thinking about something that would be an international draw on a large scale, tends to be sports, but there are other events. Seemingly something that would get a fair amount of media attention as well.

Didn't we make a profit with our Olympics? What's different about now?

While not in Atlanta, the G8 met on Seal Island back in 2008 (I think that's the correct year). That's pretty high cotton stuff.

Well said plus I have a gut feeling that the Olympics as we know them will not exist for much longer.
There are too many $$$-oriented Olympic scandals, bribery scandals & doping scandals popping up plus the overall cost when combined with the demands made by the Olympic Committee are sounding the death knell for the games.
It's becoming a known fact that the ability of any place to fund the games w/out massive corruption or a dictator(see Vlad Putin of Russia) supporting it is now almost an impossibility.
The World Cup would be much easier to finance so I could see that happening & probably generally welcome it despite the scandals that it's governing body, known as FIFA, have recently experienced.

Isn't the location determined by the President and it would have to be on the US's turn in the cycle. The downside is that it attracts protesters and they like to make serious trouble.
