Smith's is probably a little small and Buckhead Theater is larger than Masquerade - and gets bigger acts. Variety is kinda small compared to Masquerade...I think it's about the size of Star Bar. How about Eddie's Attic? I guess Masquerade was really filling a niche in Atlanta - there doesn't seem to be much else of similar size.
Variety has a capacity of 1,050 (the same as Masquerade's big room, and also the same as Center Stage). Star Bar has a capacity of 200. Eddie's is even smaller at 185.

Oh, the information I found online showed capacity of Variety at 750 and Masquerade's Purgatory at 4,000. Yeah Star Bar and Eddie's Attic are much smaller places...I was thinking Buckehead Theater was much larger but it only holds 2,500, so it's more similar in size to Masquerade than anything else so far.

Read the capacity line in that link again...

1000 (Heaven), 500 (Hell), 200 (Purgatory), 4000.

Even with the porch open out back, more than 250 people in that space is incredibly hard to imagine. I've seen events in Hell where there's been 500 people, and it certainly lives up to its name [especially in the height of summer].

I've heard very recently that the new space isn't ready just yet, and so they've pushed back the closing of the North Ave location a week or two.

4000 is definitely wrong, even as a total for all three rooms. Maybe that number is for the Music Park behind the Masquerade.

Your own link says 1000 for Variety.

4000 is the park area of the Masq. Not the inside.
Also, yes the Masq fits a much needed niche. Not because it "rough around the edges" , but because it really does book acts not too many other places will and has various sizes to its rooms to do that on multiple levels of popularity.

If you are the type of person who doesn't really care for the acts there then you won't get it. It's just going to look like any other venue just less "prissy"because it doesn't have carpet or lounge seats or whatever you folks feel you need to listen to good live music.

Is there any venue in Atlanta that has carpet and lounge seats?

Pretty sure Center Stage has this. Maybe not all that "loungey" though.
